How many miles . . .?

Hey guys! New to the station here. I have a 98 Ranger XLT 4x4 with 171K miles on it and its still going strong. The only thing I have replaced is upper and lower ball joints and an alternator. I was just wondering how many miles your trucks have seen and when you had to replace the motor.

Also, I have a 4.0. Is this a good engine? (as far as reliability)

I woukd guess it depends on whether or not something inside the engine just "lets go".....

My '89 2.9L V-6 motor is in great shape.....but the sensors on the engine began failing at 190,000 miles....replacing bad sensors can set you back a couple hundred fast.....

I'm thinking of adapting a carb & mechanical distributor to it & get another 100,000 out of it.....meanwhile, a V-8 is pushing the Ranger....LOL

My old truck (88 Bronco 2) has 328 000 km on it, and the engine still runs fine. As far as I am aware (I bought it off the original owner, I think...) it never had major engine work done. The frame is trash and the clutch is blown, so shes heading for the wrecker, but I think I might hold onto the engine, or at least some of it...

Any make vehicle will last as long as you maintain it, Bro. I have a friend who still drives his 78 Mustang he bought new in 78. 400,000 miles on it. No rust and no body damage. I have a friend who still drive his 86 Subaru 3 door hatch back that he bought new....500,00 miles on it. The original paint still looks great for an old car. If you garage keep a vehicle it will last longer as well. The point of it all is like I said....maintenance!!!

Not sure but I think my 87 had about 83K original miles on the clock about 2 years ago when I pulled the 2.0 to drop in the 5.0. It blew a head gasket.

I was the second owner of my '93 ranger with the 2.3L. It had 192,000km on it when I bought it in 2001. I sold it in 2007 with 400,000km on it and my cousin said he just saw it the other day! Man I miss that little truck.

Every day was race day with it....i got into LOTS of trouble with it Including taking jumps with it in the trails behind my highschool and playing in all the same mud holes as the 4x4's.

But it got a tune-up every fall and every spring. The only big thing I had to replace on it was the transmission...because I beat the snot out of it.


Now I have my '99 X which has 218,000km on it. The body is in MINT shape except for one small patch of rust. I told my wife that when the engine goes, I'm swapping it out for a younger 4.0 OR just rebuild the one I have. I also have a spare transmission sitting in my garage...I'm counting the days until this trans goes boom!

I got my 87 from the daughter of the original owner in March of 09. The orig owner had taken care of it but the daughters hubby had just driven it so I had to do a lot of work to it over the first year. It's a 2.9L and now has a little over 163,000 miles and runs pretty good. From what I can tell it looks to have had the heads replaced at one time or another and the clutch done...thankfully.

In short:

The 4.0L Overhead Valve configuration that you have is excellent, and the best motor you can get in a Ranger. In my personal opinion, it is stout, reliable, easy to work on/use, powerful, and pulls its weight. It will last you a while if taken care of properly and do regular oil changes...

My last 4.0L has about 205,000 miles before a drunk driver hit me and totalled the truck. My current truck has well over 120K and runs like a champ. However, this number is inaccurate, since the odometer stop reading correctly about 5 years ago. It's way higher!

Its interesting to know that yall are getting some long miles out of your trucks! Nearing 170K on mine and my AC is still ice cold and the heat will run you out of the truck

My 2.9 just turned over 200,000 miles last week. Having some control system issues, but the base engine itself is still running great. (2.9 and 4.0 are basically the same engine, 4.0 is just a bit stronger BTW).

You have overlooked the Daewoo. A Ford powertrain in a GM body, with Chrysler powertrain management, and all made with cheapo Chinese parts, in Korea. Even if you change all the fluids, plugs, and belts every other day you can't really expect to get more than 60 or 70K out of them.

Also, the AMC Gremlin. All aluminum engine with no cylinder sleeves.

LOL, i diagnosed a blown headgasket on a daewoo. had less than 10k miles on it


as for my truck, 130k (got it at 80k) and i've replaced egr position sensor, egr solenoid filter, cracked vacuum lines, spark plugs, wires, o2 sensor, oil pan gasket, oil pump pickup, front brakes (due for them again), tires, 4 shocks, belts, air filter (duh), ignition module, timing belt for precaution, crank sensor (broke after timing belt), tailgate, cd player, alternator, battery, coolant temp sensor, thermostat (twice now), heater hoses, radiator, clutch, rebuilt trans. i think thats it.

PO replaced the egr valve and maybe some other stuff.

My old room mate is pushing 200K on his '93' 4.0 4x4 with no problems. My 2000 and a guy at work with same engine/drive train, both lost our engines with cracked head or gasket at less than 75K. Good motor over all. It happens no matter how much maintenance you do. Look at all the early 2.9's had with bad heads.
