How hard to fix auto transmission gear indicator?

Hi. I have a '04 Ranger 4X4 with 4.0 V6 and automatic transmission. The other day I was putting it in reverse when I noticed that the gear selection indicator on top of the steering column moved way over to the right. I wiggled the gear change lever a little bit and the red indicator needle moved completely off to the right just to the right of the "1." When I drop the truck all the way into first gear and then move the lever back, the needle moves a little, but then goes back to the right. It's as if something has slipped off track or something. Is this common? How hard is this to fix? What exactly do you think happened to cause this? Thanks in advance for any help.

chances are one of the plastic pieces where the adjuster broke, you probably are going to have to order a new PRNDL indicator.
