High Mileage 91 4.0L

It would really depend on the source of the knock. There are lots of high mileage Rangers on the road. Here is a link to one, it's a 2.3, not a 4.0. post # 12;

I think its a valve lifter. It seems to go away when the truck warms up fully.

My 4.0 from a 91 ranger had 228,000km on it when I started racing with it. It's been overheated numerous times and still has major valve-train clatter. Last year I put it into a 93 ranger as my daily driver. I have no idea of the history of the motor, it came out of a roll-over wreck. They are a tough engine.

the older 4.0 engines are German engineering It was not ford design think it came from Volvo
