first off, thank you everyone for their contributions to this site. i snagged a barn find 89 shortbed xlt with a 2.9. i had no idea if it would run but to my suprise and a few visits to o-o-o-oreilys, she runs! but not well. did the basic tune-up crap but it wont idle down below 1500. and the hills around my house are wicked! the engine starts popping at around 4000 with or without load. im hoping this is somewhat common and might have a quick solution. with 269,000 miles, to me its not worth ripping into. i would rather swap the engine. thanks again for your input

welcome!!

sounds like you have a rather large vacuum leak

Re-check your spark plug wires for the proper firing order, it's pretty common to get a couple wrong.

Vacuum leak for the fast idle...

Couple check your spark timing... 10 degrees BTDC with the SPOUT unplugged.

I can’t seem to locate the spout connector. And I also cannot see the distributor hold down bolt. Where are the wires on the spout going to and from?

Ok. Found all the timing stuff but it might be moot because of the idle issue. Many it’s have been removed regarding the air flow such as the air box itself. It has an aftermarket cold air intake. So I’m just guessing at this point🤷🏼

Someone here may be able to hook you up with pictures of the relevant pages from the EVTM book, or you may be able to find yourself a copy on ebay or somewhere.

I’ve been noticing some telltale signs of possibly a blown head gasket or worse. Small amounts of milk on the dipstick, whitish vapor from the pipes, some white on the plugs, and I’m loosing coolant from the reservoir and it’s not on the ground. That with the high idle and lack of power tell me there’s a leak somewhere. I would rather upgrade to a small block v8. Anyone know if this would fit? 289 or 302? Or even a 4lire 6?
