My motor needs a rebuild and since i have come up on some extra cash i thought that while doing the rebuild i would throw some performance stuff in there. What do I need if i'm gonna bore it? Well how much should i bore it? How much hp can you actually get outta those little monsters.lol I want to try and touch 300hp but is that even possible? and links for parts will be greatly appreciated!

If I had the money, I would restore a 1st gen Ranger with either a 2.9l or a diesel. Rebuild it to its finest and best I could possibly get it, without making it too obvious that its not stock. OEM parts all around the truck. A stock 83-88 Ranger color, something that stands out, like red or blue metallic or that dark charcoal grey metallic with the red pinstripes like my 87. And I was thinking, I could, with some modification, incorporate the factory tach into the factory 4 gauge cluster. A quality stereo, that almost looks stock, but sounds great. Door handles made out of polished stainless, instead of chrome that pits. Maybe a custom 4-door crew-cab, 6 foot bed or a supercab, long bed.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread. Just started rambling.

The 2.9 already makes more HP/displacement than a a 5.0 HO.

300hp is a pipe dream on any reasonable budget.

Okay then how about around 200? They make what...140 stock? If a 302 swap would be easier than why does it cost so damn much? But yeah i want to get more hp out of it. i've got about $1,000-1,500 so most bang for my buck?

I totally agree! I have thought about that alot but i like to offroad and a lift and tires and motor are must haves.lol and i can't worry too much on how it looks

Building HP with the 2.9 is largely uncharted territory, and on top of that I've never seen any dyno results. 2.8 pistons supposedly work and bump up compression a little and there's a couple aftermarket cams available, after that it's down to porting and headers and I still doubt 200hp.

What you really want is torque, and that's what the 4.0 gives you.

300 na looks to be 6 grand, unless you carb it.

300 streetable around 6 grand. but thats turbo.

the stroker setup and the good heads gets ya 200 hp pretty easy...with that site above thats 3500 or so depending on what the tuner charges ya.

depending on what ya can find...i know i can do a v8 swap under 2 grand easy with a 2wd.

Welll i have a 4x4 so that v8 might be a problem? I have swapped motors before just not in a ranger. and what about the 4.0?

4.0 is excellent engine.

with the ford smallblocks i like the aod/208 combo. preferable a jeep 208. these are getting hard to find.

a late gm setup is a good way to go too. the 4.8-5.3-6.0 packages are great.

depending on where your at, it can be done under 3 grand.

only cost effective way is getting a solid running donor powertrain no matter what you want to use.

if your rebuilding or building up power its an expensive proposition.

finding a low mile solid running pushrod ford v6 or v8 isnt a very easy thing to do.

what is easy to do is find a low mile 5.3 powertrain though. thus the reason i suggest them. the cammer ford engines untill recently just are not worth the effort to me. things are changing rapidly though.

What vehicles have the 5.3? and there are quite a few good running mustangs around here. What does the 4.0 come out of? But then again could i just buy an exploder and just swap everything over?

You could get 300HP out of a 4.0 easily, it would just cost $$$$$

Lower compression pistons, ported heads/intake, larger valves, headers and a turbo pushing 15 psi. Then you get to tune it.

Trying that with a 2.9 would be an ill conceived idea, considering it's weaknesses.

If you really want HP 2.9 v6, look to Europe.
Get yourself a 24v Cosworth from a euro Ford Scorpio. Engine code BOA/BOB.
It will rev to 7500rpm, and is easily tuned to 250hp with a new intake and engine management...
Freight will cost you, engine is very affordable.
