Hi from Alabama!

The fuse box info for 98-00 shows #4 being windows, and #26 being window relay so yeah it had that whole through the GEM nonsense...

Appreciate the info Brain. Kinda what I was worried about. Stuff I didn’t know in the beginning. I should have done more research.

Maybe somebody will come along and post the wiring schematics for the '98's donor truck power windows. I don't know squat about anything '95 and newer, but something in the back of my head (those damn voices again) is saying that Ford may have starting using power window relays sometime after they started using the GEM, and then the SJB (Generic Electrical Module and Smart Junction Box).

IF that turns out to be the case, you're dealing with two different circuit types, but you can still get around it by adding your own relays so that the '98 switches can drive the '94 window motors.

A '98 schematic would be super helpful here. A picture of your '98 switches, from the backside, and the '98 wiring connector (if you have them) would help some too.

And, welcome to TRS. I'm up the road from you, in Bowdon.

Is that the driver's (double rocker switch) or passenger (single rocker)?

We'll still need the '98 schematic.

FWIW, I think you can wire up windows the old way and not have to go through the GEM, it just adds "courtesy" functions like auto rollup with one press, auto down, etc. The reason they went through relays is wiring cost savings as well as GEM integration (thinner wires drive the relay open/closed, and only one big thick pair goes from relays to motor. The switch you posted I am guessing is your 93 (some indications I have gotten is that 97 and 98 had the same wire colors, and those colors dont match 97 at all)....

Great job Brain.
Your one of the guy's that really does help guys out.

Now that you've made some progress,
Welcome to TRS Mindcrime.

Welcome to TRS, @Mindcrime (Queensryche fan, by any chance?)

Good looking truck. Sounds like it's set up pretty nicely with all that sound deadening and insulation. And power windows? Did Rangers come with those? 😂

Also, how is your center console armrest still in good shape?

I came to the same conclusion as far as GEM is concerned. The switch itself works the same so as long as I pin it right for basic functions I should have success. I have not messed with it in a few days due to weather conditions. I don’t have a shop or garage. It’s sitting out in the driveway. I have to double check the diagrams I have again to be sure, but I am seeing that the wiring was the same thru 97 and changed in 98. I may have missed something though. Once it warms up past 45 or so I will get back to it and update all this. I will take photos as well. Thanks for all the feedback.

Thanks for posting the diagrams. Gimme a minute to look 'em over.

Added:
The first schematic shows the 1998 and 1994 both have the same type of window circuit; it's called a "reversal, rest at ground". Besides wire color changes, the only other difference I see is the "auto window down" in '94 was a module in the door, and it '98 it moved to being in the Relay Box 1.

So yes, you should be able to use the '98 switches to run your '94 motors.

It'll just be a matter of comparing the two, wire by wire, and doping out the wire color-to-wire color differences.

That’s good info! I looked at the diagrams and assumed it would work, but I thought I might be missing something. I figured even if the switch ran through the gem module in later models the switch itself is not dependent on the gem just the signal routing. I wasn’t certain though. So I am glad someone else came to the same conclusion. As previously mentioned, once I get back to work on this I will share photos to help the next person. Appreciate you sir.

Reversal, rest

Yes. The '98 wiring schematic shows it, by looking at the switch diagram and seeing what the contacts are doing when the switch is moved (see the dotted line). The contacts show "resting" at ground.

The wires between the switches and motors "rest" at ground, or, are always grounded, except when a switch is moved. When a switch is moved, it changes the grounded wire to having positive voltage, which makes the motor move.

The main, most important thing to know is that on this type of wiring circuit, you can't just put positive 12 volts on the wire. You must use a switch, or a relay, to first disconnect the ground before the voltage is applied.

I hate to add more work for @Jim Oaks , but I would like to see the above window diagrams added to the tech library... I searched and searched and searched.... door locks are a dime a dozen (cause people add aftermarket remote keyless and alarms a bunch), but finding the windows was like pulling teeth..

quick spots for Jim.... posts #40, 41 (1st link, 2nd is worthless), and (most importantly) 54 (inside the quote)

I need an administrative assistant.

LOL

I'm sure you could use more then one Jim.

I hope you find at least one you can rely on.
I don't know enough about any of this stuff or I would gladly apply for the job.

Good luck.
