Its an 87 with a 2.9L automatic. Trans is bad, lower gears seem okay but reverse is gone and there's such bad slipping in the higher gears I hought the engine was going to blow on a recent test drive. I need a "new" trans and hope someone will be able to help point me in the right direction for a used one. I'm a diesel guy so gas engines aren't my thing for repair.

If you can manual swap it, manual swap it. M5OD is best option, followed by fm146.
I have a fm146 here for free if you want it. Noisy, could use a rebuild, but works.
I understand little about automatics. I have heard early ranger ones are awful, though.
