Howdy all rough night, I could use a lil help,
I have a 2005 ranger regular cab short bed 2wd 3.0 auto. Tonight driving home the truck cut off on the interstate and I coasted to the side of the road. After a few min it magically started back up. I was able to drive about 5 miles and it died again. Thankfully i was able to coast into a repair place. They said my fuel pump was probably bad. The said that if the fuel pump and sending unit is sealed as one piece, then it would be $700. They said if they were not sealed together they could put a universal pump on for $400. does this sound like a correct diagnosis? Also, is the fuel pump sealed with the sending unit, or is it sepearate? any help would be great!
Chris

Well, the FP could cause that, but without looking at it myself I can't say for sure. I think the pump and sender are 1 piece on that truck.

What part of Georgia are you in? I got some people in Atlanta.

Nope. Go somewhere else. A Ford pump goes bad it's bad. Poof. No fuel. You may have a loose connection with the pump but I doubt it. Go online and price pumps. Even if the pump was $350 the labor shouldn't be that high.

Now did the truck die all at once or did it bog down then die? If it bogged down it may be a fuel delivery issue. If it died all at once then I'd lay odds on electrical.

It bogged down, but fast and died...within 2seconds or so.... it did it the same thing the second time

Do you have fuel?

the pump for my truck is $401. They priced me at $500 for the pump, and $198 for labor. 2.3 hrs worth.

Just making sure. I didn't really think that you were that stupid, but then I've seen other people I didn't think were that stupid run out of gas and not be able to figure out why it only runs for a few seconds.

It isn't a FF ranger, is it?

Whats a FF ranger? Thanks all for the response-very much appriciated.

ok, its a wiring issue. I'm with Nitro, and highly doubt that the pump itself is at fault.

If you really want to throw money at the problem Advance has an Airtex fuel pump assy with a 1 yr warranty for $289.99 plus tax. Don't know where you're getting $401 unless it's from the dealer.

Still not the problem though.

If it takes 5 miles or so for the problem to pop up I've been in the parts business for 25 years. Back in the stone age this same issue would be solved by replacing the ignition module. They would fail after getting hot. We would hit them with a blast of freon and the vehicle would fire right over. Take the module off and have it tested. If you were up here you could bring it to me and I'd test it.

I have had multiple fuel pumps on Fords fail where they stop working and then work again. They heat up and seize, and when they cool off it will work again.

I am betting the pump is bad, just from what has been said - but that is only speculation since I can't troubleshoot it in person.

Alright guys, I went to go get it from the shop, and as I was driving it home, it did the same crap. I could drive it for 5mi and it would die. As I was driving it back the intervals at how far it would drive kept getting shorter until we pushed it into the repair shop. They thought the relay had a bad connection and fixed it.....They ran the truck a 1/4 tank worth and said it was fine.....I just dont get it. As it shuts off the battery light, then the check engine light, then the oil light comes on one at a time within 5 seconds. Mayby the ecm? Any ideas would be very helpful!
