I spent saterday and sunday installing a set of world heads on my 2.9l in my ranger. today I drove the truck and it wants to ping under slight load.
I believe my distributor is off a tooth, I have to turn my distributor clock wise
untill the plug on it is almost touching the firewall, I believe my distributor is advanced? a tooth. I have been reading the posts and archives, what should I do? I have tried to restab my distibutor a couple of times, but I have a hard time getting it fall where is should, if i rotate my cap wires which way do I move them, If I pull my distributor where should the rotor point exactly?
can anybody show me a pic?
anyways thanks for the help..

if you can get it timed correctly it doesnt matter if its off a tooth. what does it get when you throw a timing light on it?

Was the timing set WITH A LIGHT AND WITH THE SPOUT CONNECTOR UNPLUGGED?

If it wasn't, it would be seriously retarded, not pinging. It would drive like a wet towel.

There is a very minor variable with the distributor being "off a tooth." It fires fuel at a slightly different time. But it's debatable if you'll notice that even if it's 180 deg off, as long as both the rotor and housing are off by the same amount.

You can "restab" it and if it won't go in all the way, try turning the crank with a ratchet. This will turn the distributor without turning the oil pump (which is why it won't go in all the way).

try making sure you are right at TDC #1. pull your plug and stick your finger in the hole and have someone just bump the key a couple times until it blows your finger out. look in with a flashlight to verify and then recheck your valve settings and lash.
