How does it look?

Drive side .020" PINION SHIM / BACK LASH .007":

That is pretty close to perfect on the pattern, the backlash is within specs, but if its new gears I'd run the backlash a little tighter, but thats just my personal preference :icon_thumby:

Yeah, I'd like to see backlash a bit tighter, around .005.

The pattern looks pretty good. It's not biased to the inside or outside.

Run it, you're golden.

middle of the range on backlsh is 0.013" MINIMUM according to ford is 0.008" and
running them that tight tends to run the oil a bit hotter.
(but good for shock resistance)

the actual backlash spec is 0.008-0.018

I worry FAR more about achieving proper carrier bearing preload.

You adjust the backlash to 0.010 with shims that JUST allow the carrier and bearing to slid into place (like Excalibur into the stone) then you take it all apart and replace EAC?H shim with one that's 0.006" thicker

This DOES NOT work with "adjustable" three piece shims, only the solid factory select fit spacers, because one shim or the other will need to be driven into place with a hammer and big brass drift....

Personally, just stop playing with it and run it. That is a lot better than most factory set ups.

pattern looks good. You did not say whether these are used gears or not. Also, are the carrier bearings new or used?

As Allan said, make sure you have enough bearing preload. When I install a set of gears, once I get the pattern and specs within reason, (and carrier can be moved in and out with effort) for the final install I add about a thousand or 2 equally between both sides and drive it in with a BIG rubber mallet. Takes some effort, but I always get enough preload.

Be careful not to have too much preload, this can lead to premature bearing failure, excessive heat, and R&P damage
