got my nephew a 1992 ranger 4.0 auto. truck ran great for a week and all of two or three days ago it would not start. motor turns over, has fuel, NO SPARK. replaced the eesb or what ever that is,(in front of the battery). truck started just fine after that for one day and now it is back to NO SPARK. could the eec be toast. and no it is not the fuel shut off switch i have checked it. please help me and my nephew get the truck going he does not know it is his yet and he has been helping me wrench on it (no dad in the picture, im all he has in this department) he really likes to work on it but if it ran it would be so much more fun.

Working on a truck that doesn't run is the most fun! I've been doing it for 4 months now!

I don't know much in the engine department, so all i can say is good luck!

time to dig into that engine and see how she works. I'm not too familiar with the 4.0's or ford engines in general but for basic automotive I can help. Is it a DIS or does it have a distributor?

most likely a loose connection. i cant think of any "problem" parts on those trucks. check/graph the crank and cam signal from the syncroniser with a lab scope. no crank/cam signal no fire fire

I sounds like you need a good fault finding chart. You might want to check in the forums in the 4 liter sections, there are a few no start threads that might give you a few ideas.

i am MUCH more familiar with the father of the 4 liter (2.9), they had issues with the TFI module on the dist. not functioning properly (i was under the assumption that all 4liters were coil pack?). when i have spark related issues the first thing i do is check to coil(s) by cranking the engine and spraying the coil and adjacent area with a mist bottle looking for arcing (sign of a dead or dieing coil(s), bad plug wires). thats all i can think of right now.

Yes it is coil pack, truck has fuel NO SPARK. All the no starts in the 4 liter part talk about fuel. i have that just NO SPARK. Coil pack is good, new plugs, wires, ebbs sensor(in front of battery behind headlight). Could it be the crankshaft sensor. I have no check engine light. Just trying to fix this without having to take it to the shop and get wallet loved. Please help if you can.

you may be able to save time and money if you take it to a shop and have them diagnose the problem then you can fix it. It's better then just throwing parts at it.

pull codes, it may point you somewhere.

I'm assuming you have tested for power going into the coil? And if so, there is no power coming out, correct?

That is about all I can think of. If there is no power at the coil, I would just start working my way back from the coil, to see where the power comes to an end. Theoreticlly, where it ends should lay your problem.

Hope that helps, but I'm sure you have already thought of all that.

All 4.0s are DIS (Distributorless Ignition)

I'm assuming you removed a plug wire from the coil pack, and held it close enough to the contact to see if any spark would jump from the coil to the wire?

(if thats confusing, I might be able to make a video for you if you would like)

BTW VIVA*THE*RANGER. i'd hate people who have us to do the hard part and hten fix it themselves. Techs like me loose money diaging your bullshit problem for 1,0 on the clock. We make the money on the replacement. Just so you know, thanx for taking food out of my families hands because you reap the rewards of my labor. no offense but that is a dueshe bag thing to do. either man the hell up and fix it and diag it yourself. or admit that people like me know more about your truck than you do and let us diag and fix it. remember you diag and run, and you can BET that tech is not taking great care of your vehicle.

Sites like this exist so people who want to work on their own stuff can get the help and support of other people doing the same thing. Who gives a flying crap if someone only wants you to diagnose a problem. It's part of your job, get used to it. I'm a tech, I work on a 175 vehicle fleet. Most of the troubleshooting skills I have, I learned right here. Don't be jumping down a guy's throat because he may want a mechanic to diagnose his problem for him. That hour of diagnosis is going to put quite a bit more food on your table than sitting around with your thumb up your a$$ for an hour.

Damn dude. Take it easey. Sure, I don't know as much as you do. As far as I'm concerned I'm still paying for the labor/diagnoses if I do that. Right? I don't intend to take the food off of your table. The fact that you would be willing to do a shotty job on a paying customers vehicle to me is fu*ked. Your shady. Sorry to all the machanics if this offends you.
Just to let you know, I'm a tech as well. I work on cnc machines. I see your point. But I do what ever my customers want because I care about keeping them as a customer and not just about my self. For some reason Im not as good with trucks as I am with cnc. But that's fine. I learn as I go.

Oh, and learn how to spell douche. Douche bag. No offense
