I found a 1989 B2 that I am very interested in buying. It will be a project for my grandson and me. The problem is it has the push button transfer case. While I don't intend on building a monster, I would like a manual transfer case and hubs. What is involved in making the switch and what parts do I need. Thanks in advance for your help. :icon_welder:

You'll need a manual transfer case and manual hub kit. Steps involved are:

remove electric t-case
install manual t-case
remove auto hubs
install manual hubs
:D

not quiet that easy but close, transfer case pretty much just swap it in and install the shifter, and if the lights are a issue its not that hard to wire it up, now for the hubs you will need to swap the lock nuts that hold the bearings in to the set that is on manual hubs there is a right up for this in the tech section too

extremely easy did my t-case in about 2 hours on the ground with out even jacking it up. did the hubs when i changed my rotors and bearings (check these while your at it, i had a bearing going bad and didn't know it) didn't take 30 minutes a side.

be careful of your donor. check the u-joint sizes on both your vehicle and the donor different years can be different sizes, same with transmissions the sifters are different for different trannys. the front drive shaft can be different also, most 1350's have slip yokes built into the case, new cases(mostly 1354's, some 1350's) have a front fixed yoke with a slip in the drive shaft. you should have a slip joint in your t-case stock

the process is simple, remove the skid plate, 4 bolts on the rear drive shaft, same on the front (remove at the hogs head pull the slip joint out at the t-case), then 5 bolts on the tcase itself. be careful the tcase can sometimes hang on the alignment pin. install in reverse.

the hubs involve removing all the auto hub guts on the spindle and replacing them with manual hub nuts (sold as a conversion kit from warn and mile marker) this will require a torque wrench and special hub socket there is a good write up on this in the tech library

any other questions or want more details just ask

That's why I love this site!!! You can always count on someone sharing their knowledge. Thanks I think I go ahead and buy this and see what happens.

then 5 bolts on the tcase itself. be careful the tcase can sometimes hang on the alignment pin.

what do you mean it can hang up? i bought a manual borg warner 1350 today to replace my electric borg warner 1350. should the front shaft be the same? this one came off a FM145 tranny and i'm runnin a FM146... what about the back? when i changed from FM145 to FM146 i needed a shorter or longer ( i forget) rear shaft so that's why i ask. Should all be the same unit right? just different shifting mechanism

A manual 1350 should directly swap in place of an electric 1350 without mods.

The hanging up comes from rust/corrosion around the dowel pin. With enough wiggling & prying, it should pop free.

perfect thanks, i'll take pics and what not cuz i haven't seen many, any actually, for this swap and it seems like a common one so...
