does anyone know if its possible to convert my 05 ranger open differential to a limited slip??? its 2wd and traction absolutly sucks on it

the cheapest and easiest way is to get a complete l/s axle assembly from a junkyard and bolt it into your truck.

if you want to load a l/s into your current axle housing, you'll need a l/s carrier. you'll have to have the gears set back up since your backlash will be off. this isnt something easily accomplished by the home mechanic and paying to have it done is spendy (usually $3-500).

another option is a lunchbox locker. it reuses your current carrier, so no gear setup, and they can usually be had for a few hundred bucks.

what truck could I find an l/s axles with 4.10's out of? were all 4x4's equipt with l/s?

the 06+ sport 2wd usually come with a 4.10 L/S 8.8. at least mine and my buddy's did

another question... im uneducated on this stuff so bear with me :) . Will a 28 spline 8.8 bolt right up to my stock stuff or do i need to make more changed than just the rear end? Also my truck is a 2.3 i want to put some 31's on it. will 4.10's be good or should I go with something else? BTW the stocker is 3.73 open.

a 28 spline 8.8 is a bolt-in swap. nothing else needs to be changed.

31's with a 4 banger...i would go with 4.56's personally....but 4.10's would be "bearable".

+1,another good call by wicked_sludge. I had 31's and 3.45 and it was RETARDED SLOW. I left it like that for a good 2 months. And it sucked. In those 2 months I think there was more wear on my truck than the 10 years of it's life before.

hmmm maybe i'll look for a newer fx with 4.56's and L/S what is needed to convert to the 31 spline 8.8?

if you get it out of an FX4, nothing. it bolts in. but good luck finding that axle in the junkyard.

an explorer 31 spline needs the spring perches flipped and your rangers shock mounts welded to the axle tube.

but IMO, a 31 spline axle behind a 4 banger is a bit of a waste. youd be awful hard pressed to break a 28 spline axle and those are plentiful and cheap.

You won't find an axle with factory 4.56 gears, if that's what you were hoping.

FX4 axles came in either 4.10 or 4.56 ratios (i know, i was as surprised as you). its axle code R8.

Really? I though there were some discussion about this and it was determined 4.56 axles were thought to not to exist?..... I guess I can't keep with everything on here, lol. You being a tech would probably know better anyway.

That's pretty cool.

ya that's why i said a newer fx4, but like wick said i'll probably never find one. we'll see tho.
