I needed to change spark plugs on my 2000 ranger 2.5 with 144,000 miles as the check engine light came on. To my surprise, there are eight of them. I was intimidated by the intake manifold and soon gave up, taking truck to mechanic. He asked if I would like to replace wires at the same time. I said OK. When i got the truck the ignition wires did not lay in order as they did before. The mechanic said that the aftermarket wires are longer than the original. I wonder if the wires are connected from the correct ignition location to each side of the cylinder. Does it matter? Now each drivers side plug is connected to a connection nearest the drivers side. The module nearest the front powers the drivers side plug in cylinder 2 and 3 and the passenger side plug in 1 and four. Are these mis wired? the truck seems to run OK and check engine light has not come on.

i have a 92 2.3 that has the same setup and the front one powers all the pasnegers side (best i can remeber) and the rear powers the driver. this sytem is a primery and secoundery coil pack, if one fails the others one tacks over or undewr certoin conditions they both fire. i will say this it might be a good way to trick the computer in to fireing both coils at once but as far as i know this is wrong

I looked at several engine pictures on yahoo motors and have determined that the front pack should power the drivers side plugs. I have the firing order from this web site. I will try to switch the wires tomorrow. 409 auto repair in Sanger, Texas evidently did not bother to find this out.
