I have a 99 3.0L. I was changing the oil one day last week and messed up pretty bad. I was having trouble screwing on the oil filter from the top of the truck (i just couldn't get it lined up right) so i decided to try from the bottom. I got the oil filter on from the bottom but didnt have much room to move my hands so i just ran it on the threads some and decided i would finish tightening it from the top. I was already under the truck so i went ahead and put the drain plug back in and got everything out from under the truck. I completely forgot to tighten the oil filter and started it up. I backed out of the driveway and took off down the road. I drove about 2 miles before the truck shut off while i was sitting at a stop light. The truck wasn't sluggish, didnt have a loss of power, and never gave me any knocking noises. I opened the hood and realized what i had done. I put oil in it and the truck wouldnt start. When i turn the key to start it, it was giving me one click and then nothing. The next day I tried it and same thing. After trying to start it a few times, it started kind of turning over. It sounded like it made about a stroke and a half and then it wouldnt do anything. I pulled the plugs and sprayed some tri-flow in all the cylinders. I also tapped on the starter with a hammer a few times. I tried to start it again and it slowly started turning over. It turned over a few times and stopped. Now when i try it just gives me one click and nothing happens. Do you think the motor is fried? Or do you just think its the starter because it got soaked in oil? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

I think you fried your motor.

Pull out the spark plugs and try to turn the engine from the crankshaft pulley bolt (socket, ratchet and extension).

If it will turn, listen for bad sounds, scraping, hard to rotate at certain points, etc.

3.0 motors are a dime a dozen at the JY's. Sounds like you'll be needing one.

I am sorry for your loss.

Just put a ratchet on the front crank bolt and turn. If you can move the engine AT ALL, go further. But I don't think you'll be able to.

You probably seized the engine.

That sucks man, your battery might be getting low at this point as well too. But I agree, there's a good chance it seized.

Remember next time to look under the truck for drips while it's running before taking the road test. :) I test stuff like this as best as I can, I am no professional and make mistakes (shit happens).

LOL... any excuse for a V8, eh? Maybe you can tell your insurance co. some "road debris" punctured your oil filter/pan and get them to pay for the new motor? After all, it was an accident (brain fart), right?...

I'm KIDDING, I'm a kidder... good luck with the V8. Personally I'm more intrigued by the 2.3L(ima) TURBO coupled to full-time AWD!! :icon_idea:

Lol i wish insurance would pay. Im not set on a V-8 just heard alot about the swaps. I could always rebuild and super it.:icon_confused: any ideas?

did anyone make a full-time awd ranger yet, if so, id ove to see pics and know how it was done

I am sure you have determined the status of your motor by now but here is a something to consider in case you haven't... Oil spraying around in your engine bay could get into your starter and mess it up... It would not explain your stalling out but it may explain your inability to turn the engine over...

Just a thought...

I read in the relevant forum that the AWD transfer case from an Exploder is the same size/bolt-pattern as Ranger 4WD xfer cases... downside apparently is no 4LO... don't know of anyone doing it yet.

so i put it in the shop...talk about $3500 in repairs..

V-8 swap here i come!!

Hey, everybody's doing it! I mean, I just went outside and drained the oil AND coolant on my sisters Cavalier, that way when it blows up, we can put in a V8, haha... Hope everything works out for ya man...

you can swap out the motor over the weekend for a few hundred with the help of a buddy,
