Hello,
Looking for a new home, (for friendly advice and discussion of Rangers)
Not all forums are for working class people.
I'm impressed at the reading I have seen here regarding the transmissions.
I'm a 2 owner Ranger owner, my 1st new a 1985 ranger and now a used 94 Ranger with less than 1000k and the trans is out, thew front seal apparently blew and I lost all power on rural Bluegrass Parkway last Thursday night.
I don't mind to pay for something however, some shops I've done business with, are greedy, and not so wise to what the needs may be to the fix of a problem. My road warrior a 323 1988 hatch. Even workmanship I encountered on the road in Bowling Green ,Ky was bad. Sad fuel Pump was bad, when paid and on the road, refueled in 1.5 hours later, fuel poured on the ground from the fuel pump area. Found a screw head was broken and the screw was holding the seal from the pump and the gas when full at the tank was running out at the lower neck.
$301. for the job, 2 night's in a hotel. And still not fixed my cars issue. The car still stalls and the shop advises other issues, thermostat $90 fix, mass air flow issue, to fowled plugs. Hit and mis tactics, the ran 1/4 tank of my fuel to make the determination my fuel pump failed when the engine died for no reason at idle.
Now my Ranger is down and the shop I had the trans serviced (in Lexington, Ky., says there was no way to know that would happen, due to the bell housing concealing the worn seal.
After some reading here on his type transmission and all the problems and later fixes, I believe the shop guy to be truthful thus far.
Does anyone know the approximate cost to repair it correctly and does this forum have a list of the best fixes for this style trans to last many thousand miles? Changing fluid are a must, but I want to run more than 100k. I don't have time for downed transmissions. I'll go back to all manual again. I've never in my 40 years of total driving, even had a clutch replacement in a manual trans.
I believe in running long miles, several hundred if possible with an o/d trans. Most of my overall driving and ownership is with manual trans and I believe in maintenance religiously.
I have learned on this experience that AAA will not tow for toy trailer. If you need a tow on your toy trailer and you have a one ton truck and neither will be towed on the plan of AAA plus.
Any ideas on any other tow/assistance plans, please.
Thank you,
David
