Hi from Central Texas. My name is Ray, 39. I recently purchased a 1991 Ranger 3.0. The understanding was that the head gasket was blown. Upon removing the water pump I realized that was trash, too. After seeing the pictures, would you recommend continuing with the rebuild or buying a new short block? Is there anything I need to look for to determine how to proceed?

Hello Ray... welcome to TRS

Sure looks like that engine lacked cooling system maintenance for most of it's life. The impeller is rotted off the water pump. It could very well be the reason it blew a head gasket. Also appears someone tried some stop leak once or twice. I would guess it ran straight water for a long period of time. It plays hell on the cooling system.

I think it's worth a teardown to see what else it needs but I suspect you'll end up with a complete reman. That's going to have to be hot tanked by a machine shop and I don't expect the internal parts are going to look better than the coolant passages.Death by neglect and the knucklehead who caused it probably bad mouths the truck.

Hey Ray--I'm also in Cove but have no experience with the problem you are facing. We should have a beer sometime and ponder Ranger stuff.
