Hi, i have a 1998 v6 3.0 Ranger with a automatic transmission. I have recently done a engine swap successfully, i had to swap engines because engine had 286,000 miles on it and showed signs of old use. Now my transmission is slipping and im tired of having a automatic transmission. My idea is to take my automatic transmission out and mount on another 1998 Ranger transmission but have it be a manual 5 speed one. Would this work??? Would i have to rewire sensors??? Would i have to get a different gauge since mine doesn't have rpm on it??? I am aware I am going to have to cut a hole in the cab to mount the shifter and all but i need to know if this is possible and if is can it be done by a person of my skills? Like i stated i swapped a engine all by myself and it runs great.. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and helping me out with this dilemma. And if you are selling a 5 speed transmission that will fit and are located in California please msg me at crazy4bowln@hotmail.com

Thanks once again
Ryan

No cutting holes in the cab for the shifter, there's a removeable plat in the floor for that.

You don't NEED to swap instruments as many trucks even with manual trnasmissions don't come with a tach.

You will probably need a different driveshaft, because the Manual transmission
is shorter and uses a larger spline than the 4R44E auto you have now.

There will be some wiring (a removeable harness from the donor) and a different computer (manual trans) to avoid getting malfunction indications...

what about

thank you for your fast response, what about the clutch though??? What would i have to do to hook it up??? And could i get by w/o changing all wiring? Its okay if the cpu thinks theres something wrong with it, i will know that there isnt anything wrong.

You don't understand EEC-5/OBD2 will refuse to cooperate and will NOT pass inspection if you don't make it "happy"

And making it "happy" is a matter of the the correct engine computer and a lenght of harness.

As for the clutch, you'll need an "organ donor" for the pedal support, pedals, and clutch line anyway.

That can come off of any 1998-up

Do you think i should go with it or do you think its too much trouble? And is there a way you could give me a ball park figure of how much this would cost if i were to go to a junk yard? Ive called around and talkd to many people and no one has gotten back to me yet.

It really isnt that difficult. ECC is unplug and plug in. The small wire harness that Allen is telling is easy to swap out. When you see it you will understand. Swapping pedal is the harder part. Go ahead and take your seat out. It gives you extra room. The best thing to do is find a donor vehicl with all parts you need. You also need the clutch master cylinder which is bolted on the firewall. All holes you need are already in your truck. As for a ball park I could get all parts at a You pull it for uaround $100 plus the transmission. You can do it. I helped a buddy do his and it took a weekend.

The thing is except for the transmission a "They pull it" junkyard probably
couldn't be bothered to pull things like the pedal support as it isn't all that big
and REQUIRES on the '95-up that the column be removed first.

And they tend to apply "hack, slash & burn" methods to pull the trans
and that atleast implies that they will cut that short harness you need
(which also includes the wire & connector for the cat monitor)
and almost certainly they will cut the clutch hydraulic line.

That line alone is a $60-$90 part depending on where you get it
and it's NOT mounted to the firewall, but actually "bayonette" mounted
to the pedal support itself, though on a 1995-up there is a rubber boot
to seal it to the firewall. so you'll need to disconnect it FIRST simply to
get the pedal support out of the vehicle.

BTW, a universal socket (NOT a socket on a universal) is really useful to
get the pedal support unbolted from the firewall.

The bolts have 13mm heads.

I have a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 4.0 v6 with an automatic. is it possible to swap a 2wd 1995 v6 4.0 manual into the 2000? if this is possible what will i need to do this? my 1995 has everything in it but how would i make the 4x4 work in the 2000?

Wow thanks for all the input on this everyone, I have found someone willing to transfer his manual parts for my automatic parts, only thing is he has a 95 4.0 v6. Can this years transmission with everything else hook up to mine??? He has been wanting to do the same thing as me but go from manual to automatic hehe..

Please someone help, this guy with the other transmission is waiting for me to see if they are compatible, ill forever be in your debt. Thanks once again for all who have helpd so far.

Maybe I got lucky but I picked up the pedal assembly and master cylinder w/hose for $45. He actually thru in an extra master. The hard part is getting it in.

The 4.0 trans will not fit a 3.0 engine.

The two engines use completely different bellhousing patterns.

the auto trans on a gen4 3.0 is completely different from the 4.0 auto so that won't work even if it would bolt up.
