Has anyone done this before??


A gearmatic overdrive unit would work nice.You could put 4.56 gears in the back for pulling and then go to overdrive for the road.They shift back and forth.About $1500 but you can find some used ones around.Nice thing is you can switch them from car to car so one time investment
 
you need to talk to AllanD. there are few benefits to what you want to do. I know if you're good a 13-50 can be shifted on the fly from low to high, the old man did it all the time. he would shift first, second, third, fourth....... low to high, second, third, fourth, fifth ....... and that was an 85 with a 2.8L

I don't how he did it and there was grinding involved.... but he also drove truck from 1966 - 1998 (minus 2 years as a helicopter pilot in Viet nam) .......

I am going to add it is not something I would do or recommend because I have seen the old man do plenty of things I cannot dupplicate ........ and i got no idea what kinda shape the T-case was in ..... it was our wood truck......

What an interesting difference this swap has made with the 3.73's and the low range. I do not want to get too overconfident just yet, but tomorrow I am installing the posi-trac and think a 100lbs of weight added to the rear will get me most places I want to go. Can not wait to get the boat (1800lbs) to the lake and watch the faces on those few with their big Hemi's that smirk at us small truck owners:icon_rofl:
 
A guy near me had a 91 ranger with 5 spd and 4.10's 2wd that he pulled a 30 ft boat with. he only sold it because he bought a 50 footr. It pulled fine but was unstable on the road. He also had 31 inch thornbirds.

Bet you could watch the gas gauge drop like a bad habbit. I was going to go with the lower gears but thought my fuel mileage would suffer. I kinda have the best of both worlds...27mpg hwy plus extra low range. I went to the wrecking yard today and pulled a 93 instrument cluster out of an Explorer (wanted the tach). Pulled down a great site explaining how to swap out a 93 cluster with a 92 that had a tach. Just followed the directions but reversed the steps since I was going with a 93 w/tach into a 92 w/out and 4cyl. After a little trial and error/have it hooked up and running great. Everything works except 4whl lights (do not need anyway).
 
I have been racking what brain I have, about torque with my lit'l 92 4 banger w/5sp. My problem with low end power for pulling anything on an incline...

A suggestion was made to install a 4x4 transmission/transfer case to utalize the gears. I would not be mounting a front end under it and thought I would ask some of you what would work for this application in order to bolt it up to the 2.3L? Any suggestions are much appreciated. I do not see why it would not work.

Sounds like a plan to me!! mine has issues pulling its own weight up inclines . Gotta love being one of the slowest cars on the road not being able to do the speed limit through the mountains:annoyed:

Matt: Depending upon your states licensing regulations when you renew your registration, pull your "CAT" off and the shop can fix it where they can put a streight pipe there and then when it comes time to renew, you can put the CAT back in. Also, on the intake, the black plastic tube is blocked 60%, I removed the insert and you will not believe the difference in power I noticed:icon_thumby:

My cheap fix was to go to 60 series low profile tires , I needed tires anyway and they cost less than the original 225 70 series not like having the 1st gear granny in my '71 F350 dualie but definately more driveable

don't bother getting rid of the cat, I'm using the stock cat and exhaust with my turbo engine and it runs fine... it'd probably help if I redid things but that'll come, and I'll even be putting a cat back in it even though I could get around not having one...
 
Hmmm...wouldn't going to higher (lower) gears in the rear give you better pull? the 3:73s are not as good as the 4:10 or higher...I think the 4:56 would be best for this application...and you wouldn't need to monkey with the tranny...but you'd lose top end...
 
yes lowering the gear ratio works good, same thing as going with a shorter tire... 3.73's and stock size tires for most 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive rangers (IE short) would be a good setup, 4.10's would get the rpm's up pretty high...
