well, its illegal to just "call it an ho" and sell it as one. The casting # looks like a round stamp right?
 
No, it's raised numbers. There are the four I mentioned and then sometimes 2 more letters afterwards.
 
gt40's will have 3 lines on the fron tlike this

Do you have the rocker covers off?

4 lines is the GT-P head with the smaller exhaust.
 
i had'em off, and can pull them off again. The only #'s i seen on them was 2800 and a raised set of #'s that were in a circle.
 
The circle of numbers sounds like a shift thing.

I think this is where to look on the E7 heads. The GT40/GT40P has GT, GT40P cast inside the rocer cover.

ok, so, checked the heads, no lines on the front of them, but they use the Autolite 764 plugs that were listed for the Cobra engine.. Sorry if im asking lame questions, I just done know all the details about fords different heads for the small block
 
Thanks for posting the pics will. The two sets of numbers i was talking about were the date code, and the circle of numbers on the right in the top picture. On the second pic, where is that number, i cant make out what part of the head it is. Is that uncer the intake manafold?
 
if you dont have lines on the front you could have E6 heads, which are total crap.b it shouldnt be that jard to find the casting numbers really
 
well a close up pic of what they look like doesnt help much,]. i was told buy a dude to pift off the valve cover, and then bam, there it is....well, like i said, i only found two sets of numbers. Why would they put shit heads on an engine and say its a HO? Thouse three lines are the be all and end all to show what heads they are?
 
I've been wondering about the different heads for the 5.0Ls too. I've got an 86 5.0L from an 86 Cougar, and a 5.0L HO from a 93 T-bird. And wasn't sure which heads to use. They looked the same to me and both had a big "T" cast in them between the rockers. So I used the heads from the 86 that I had already brought in and got hot tanked.

I've been finding a few little things between the engines, like the 86 engines cam had slightly more lift but less duration than the 93HO, the 93HO pistons are notched for the valves(which i thought was weird cause the 86 has slightly more lift), the timing cover was different and the water pump was different because of that.

Im still curious where the part numbers located on the heads tho... I also only found the date codes.

Those numbers are between the pushrod holes under the heads on that head.

They are going to be somewhere.
 
The numbers from that area i got were E8SE from the 86 5.0L and E7TE from the 93 5.0LHO
 
E7TE is correct for an '87 to '95 HO.

E8SE isn't going to be an original head on an '86--the "E" means 1980's decade and the "8" means 1988. To keep going here, the third letter is what type of vehicle it was intended for. The "T" in the E7TE is "truck" as those heads were used on all the 5.0 and 5.8 truck motors as well. An "A" is for full-size cars like Crown Vics. The "S" you stated would have been used on a Thunderbird. The "E" is for engine as it's an engine part. I'm not aware of any heads cast just for a Thunderbird, I would have expected the E6AE head or the E7TE.

The Z in the F3ZE head means it was a part made initially for the Mustang.

The complete part number for a head would have another 4 digit sequence, though it isn't always cast into the part. I believe a head would have 6049 after the casting number and then another 2 letters that I don't know what they mean--so that HO head part number would realy be E7TE-6049-XX. Most likely those indicate engineering changes. I believe there is a tech page in the TRS library about this stuff.
