ok,i got up off my butt long enough to look at this thing.
first, theres this hunk of frame under the collector that i need to remove on the passenger side.this was first discussed about page 4 or 5,now 65 pages later it's time.
as you can see i have already cut this same part out from the driver's side.this gives the needed clearance for the connection to the sidepipes.
this is the inlet elbow for the sidepipe,it needs to be connected to the header outlet.i was going to use a bolted flange mount at first but realised it would be too stiff a connection and probably lead to cracking at the collector.after considering some options,i realised a simple slip joint like that on a dirt bike exhaust would be my best option, both for isolation and packaging(remember, this real estate must also be shared with the front tire, and it doesn't share well)
another issue is to trim out the rockers so the pipes can be set in.as you can see here, mother nature has helped out by reclaiming almost all the metal on the passenger side.this means less to cut out,but it also means that what is left will not be too good to weld the new rocker inserts to.
i see a fair bit of work in my future here.
on the driver's side theres more metal to work with.seems that someone
(who could it be?)has already fixed the rust on this side,so all that nice work will have to be cut out....but at least there's someting to weld to.
i put in this picture looking up at the rear wheelwell just because i thought it looked neat.
a look down the insert for the pipes.as mentioned before, these are just 3 foot long glasspacks.
