Gt-12

I'm looking forward to seeing how you are going to handle the front suspension and steering.
I was always told "you can't put a quart in a pint pot" perhaps you could try that after this project's finished.

you'll see some front suspension soon, and the steering really had me stumped for a bit-but i think i got it figured out.

as for the 'quart in a pint pot',that's a pretty apt description of what's going on here.:icon_thumby:

you make me want to try things i have no idea how to do

that's the only way to learn...trust me,i have no idea how to do this-i just knew i wanted to,so i got going.

by the time i'm finished i should have at least some idea how it's done:D

so,i put the hood on.....

surprise!it won't close.

but,of course i expected that.now, the problem...i want the carbs to stick out,but the humps for the timing chains at the front of the cam covers are higher than the hood too-and i don't want them to be exposed.the engine is as low as i can go(one of my rules on this build is that nothing can be lower than the frame rails)so i need another solution.

gt6003-14.jpg

so heres what i came up with-the hood has this hump in the middle that was to clear the valve cover on the inline six.....

i'm going to cut it out, then widen it out to the width of the v12.this should give me just enough extra height to clear the timing chains, and if done right, not look stupid.(looking stupid detracts from the cool factor, can't have that)and cut a big-ass hole in the middle for the carbs.it looks like i can do this without disturbing the louvers on the top of the hood.

i need to get the hood down so i know just how much room i (don't) have for the front suspension.the rear had tons of room around it,the front i'll be fighting for every 1/16th.i'm expecting goodies on saturday to start mocking the front up.

how about raising part of the hood so that it covers the engine, but exposes what you want?

that's basically what i'm doing by widening the bulge.it will help keep the stock lines, just the proportions will be changed.

you know i can see that you have a problem but you always seem to fix it haha. I know it will work and the chain covers wouldnt look too bad above

oh, I must have missed you saying you were going to widen the buldge. Thats exactly what I was thinking.

that's what building things is all about-identifying problems, then finding solutions to those problems.
do that enough times in a row,and the project's done:icon_thumby:

great minds think alike,huh:D

heres the cut lines.an interesting thing is that when i was measuring for this i found the mark i put on the hood where the cam covers would meet the hood over two years ago when i was first figuring out how things would sit.the cam covers ended up right at that mark.

hole cut,hood closed.

as you can see the timing chain humps are all that sticks up-they need about 1 1/2'' to clear.the rest of the cam cover is below the hood line.the oil filler on the left cover is a bit of a problem-i'm going to cut this off, smooth out the cover, and relocate the filler to the rear of the engine.

profile shot.wheel looks pretty big in that little fenderwell...
