I've been wanting to veneer the steel gauge cluster I made for my truck with birch, but wasn't sure the best way to fasten it to the metal - do you have any thoughts on this?
I'd think you'd be able to find an iron-on veneer... Rough it up and iron away.
Birds eye maple would be awesome, spalted maple is cool too. Since you seem to be around boats a lot, I'll throw teak out there. Or Ironwood. That stuff looks like sex with some varnish on it. Costs about as much though too.![]()
Just read from start to finish, and I have to say that you should definitely go with the bird's eye maple... and awesome build!
I think you should go with osage wood (we call it Hedge wood though)

it is pretty tough wood, its pretty resistant to everything.
(I bet you could weld with it if you wanted too.)
are you going to polish the headers or wrap them?
