so last night i was getting to fitting the last primary tube,but something just didn't look right.
one thing i learned a long time ago is that if it isn't right,it doesn't matter how much time i have into it-it has to come apart and be fixed....

so i tore out every tube and spent today reconfigureing everything.now i'm much happier.

i like to avoid straight tubes as much as possible,my goal is to have them look a bit like a bucket full of snakes all twisted around each other.
just a few more pieces to fit up and i can get to welding.

I'm mkaing a custom headliner for my truck. I built it, wrapped it, and installed it. DIdn't like it, had a feeling of not liking it, and took it out. Everyone asks why the metal roof is showing again since it looked good. "I didn't like it."

that's the thing...even if everyone else thinks it's just fine,you are the one that has to live with it for however long.

in my case,things like that just piss me off more and more the longer i have to look at them.

and no matter what no matter how small the thing u did wrong is you will always notice it even if no one else ever does. i got a scratch on my tail light on my ranger and it drove me nuts for a year till i rolled it.

absolutely.....and rolling a truck is a good way to make minor scratches less noticable-at least that's what i found.

So did you build the intake manifold? That's pretty cool. Just out of curiosity, why'd you do carbs over fuel injection? Maybe you already answered that one but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

that's about 60 or so pages back,details on the intake about 20 or so pages back.

in a nutshell:jag fuel injection unreliable,plus i didn't have the computer.dual holleys=cool.

figured while we're on the subject of the intake manifolds,i'd show how they came about.

this is the way the engine was when i got it.low profile,but not too attractive.
plus,i knew i wanted dual 4barrels.

after some contemplation,i realised if i cut the runners from the intakes i could turn them and rearrange them to bolt on like this.

after a bit more trimming and fitting,i set a carb spacer and carb on top to see how it looked...i liked it.

i knew there was going to be a lot of grinding and welding,and didn't want to do this on the engine,but still needed to make sure everything remained aligned,so i made a fitting jig.

it's just a 1/2'' aluminum plate precicely drilled and tapped to allow the runners to bolt up.there was also another to keep the carb plates lined up,but it has since been cut up to become material for other jobs.this one is still being used as there is still some work to do on the manifolds.

a view of the bottomside of the manifold shows how the runners were welded back together to form the bottom of the plenum.

so,after cutting off all the injector mounting bosses and filling the holes,this is how they sit now.note that the top of the plenum was made from a carb spacer-this saved a lot of time compared to machining them from plate.

another ebay goody...the tach done showed up

so now i have everything for the dash except for one broken switch,which i'm still searching for.also the wood is thrashed,and will need to be replaced.new dash wood is available in the $250 range,plus all the other usual charges.i might just make my own.

also,new bezels and glass are available for the guages,so i will replace these to freshen it up,as well as touching up things like the paint on the needles.

back to the header fab...i now have a nice selection of tubes to weld up.time for some tiggin.

The wooden dash on those things used to go bad in short order. I would suggest making your own, that way you'll get the job done right. A metal or marine ply base with a vaneer (how is that spelled) of your choice would make it better than the original.

I've been wanting to veneer the steel gauge cluster I made for my truck with birch, but wasn't sure the best way to fasten it to the metal - do you have any thoughts on this?

You need to rough up the metal and then use a good quality contact cement. Gwaii will probably post a brand name for you that is indestructable.
