Great work, also wondering what kind of wood your going to use to cover up the beautiful aluminum dash? I think tht it was discussed and thats the only other time I chimed in on this thread.... Anyways I think it would also be cool to get a pic of all of your creations kinda grouped together like a monster family picture.

i'll be useing birdseye maple on the dash.it was covered a ways back,but it was a long ways back.i've actually been shopping for it just the last couple of days.

a group photo will have to wait a while-still too much to get finished.

but i've found a moment to get some more rust out of the way...

the passenger side rocker has been cut almost completely away.this is what's going to hold the body to the frame,for the most part,so it needs to be structurally sound.

i finally got another shipment of metal in,so i've been able to start making up parts again.this is the new inner panel for the rocker,it's the part that actually meets the outer frame rail to bolt the body to the frame.

and this is the frame rail it bolts to.

this is the outer rocker i made a while back...it will house the sidepipe and finish the triangle formed with the door sill and inner rocker.

speaking of the doorsill,you can see in this pic that this one is pretty much shot.i left it in for now just to maintain the door opening.it will be replaced.

the left side will get all the same attention.it's in better shape than the right side was,but still in need of total replacement.

another spot in need of attention now that i have material again is the inner fenderwell.

the tub is intendede to stay with the chassis,the fender-shaped panel is to meet up with a steel panel of the same shape which will be welded into the inside of the rear fender and hold the outer section of the wheel tub...which will also be part of the rear fender and match up with the aluminum tub when the body is installed.

and by the way...that nice aluminum dash?

here's what it looks like wearing (most of)it's clothes.everything has to be freshened up,of course,but as you can see it was just to be the structure to hang all the good bits off of.

Birdseye maple looks good Doc, great choice! The osage orange wood would look a little funny on the dash of a red, and silver car now that I think about it.
yellow/greenish dash in a red, and silver car what was I thinking? lol

I think Weezl finally fell into insanity waiting for this car to get finished. The only cure is seeing the GT12 flying down the highway, along with smoky burnouts.

on the subject of the woodwork,i've decided i want the maple on the top of the interior door panel as well.i think it'll dress up the interior nicely...but it means i have to figure out how to mold veneer to a compound shape.it's not extreme,but it's not a flat panel,either.

did some more sheet metal work.

made the inner rear fender panels.it's the usual cardboard template,plywood hammerform,bang on some metal routine.

these are made from 20ga steel as they get welded to the body.

here's where it sits...the outer part of the wheelwell will be built between this and the outer fender.

ya,there's lots of pics with a random combination of vehicles....especially with shorty,since it's basically my yard tractor(look at the beginning of this thread as an example)but there's no posed group photo as such.

edit...i just looked back at the first page-we have the gt,shorty,wheelie,and stretch in a variety of photos.maybe by summer i'll be able to get a group together.

so,after spending some time measuring for the next step,i decided i needed to make some minor changes to my new inner fender panels.

so i made new ones.(that's my lateset apprentice in the foreground-when she gets in the way,i pull her tail,give her noogies,then she goes off and chews her stuffie in the corner)

it's not a huge difference,but i'm happier now.

this lead me to consider some job costing...and shows how costs can add up on a project like this.

the cardboard for the template came from an old box,so it was free.
the hammerform used up a 1/4 sheet of 1/2'' plywood.the sheet cost me $28,and resulted in negligible wear on sabre saw blades...so $7 worked to form both sides.
the sheet metal(20ga cold rolled steel)was about $200 by the time i got it in my hands,and each panel used 1/4 sheet-for $50 each side.once again,wear on cutting supplies were negligible,so i'm not counting this.
time was about 5 hours to make the form and both panels.i have enough work lined up that i can be sure of how much money i'd make had i done that instead of working on this.


so these seemingly insignificant parts have a significant cost associated with them,and they are just a couple from literally hundreds that have to be made for this project.

if i can get away with spending less than $20g on this build(not counting labour)i'll consider myself lucky.

hm; your master work is rated at what??? if dealerships can charge $100 an hour and they suck-- that means your hourly rate is what? $300? lol.. you're way over 20g's lol

y'know,it's funny the kind of things that will lead a guy to spend a bunch of extra time and material changing something that won't be seen when the car's together.i guess that's what keeps the insanity rolling.

i wish i could get $300.maybe if i weren't in the middle of nowhere

but,i wasn't including labour anyway....if i did,i'd be further ahead just buying a new enzo and calling it a day.
