so i was going down the highway today in 5th and as i was slowing down the stupid MFer got stuck in 5th so i stop pretty close to where i was going, walk there get a lift back to my truck and try and try to get it out of gear, but i cant, so i start it, and rev it incredibly high and let off the clutch real slow like and barely get it going, and drive it home like that burning the clutch the whole way home, get it there and take the shifter off and get the metal gasket thing off of the plastic spacer that the shifter was on and finally get it out of gear :yahoo: but the spacer is completely wrecked and now i need a new one, Oreily's doesn't have it, AutoZone doesn't have one, every single place i called doesn't even have it listed in their parts directory, they said it would probably be a dealer part and since i figured this out after the local ford dealership has closed i have to go all weekend without a ride gahh im so pissed

AND to top it all off i cant get it out of reverse now because i left it in gear and took the damn shifter out and cant get it back in the transmission to take it out of reverse...anyways heres some pics of the spacer

this is where the spacer is supposed to go

what should i do to get it out of reverse?

no access for the lathe but i think im going to tyler ford (local ford dealership) tomorrow and getting the washer, and sorry for the crappy cell phone pics

any help on how to get it out of gear?

once you install the new bushings, you gotta put the shifter back in, angled like it's already in reverse. once you get it lined back up and in the proper position, it will shift like normal

you sure cuz i tried that but without the bushings in...it acted like it was in neutral but wouldnt go in any other gear and i know that its still in reverse cuz i just had to drive it in reverse to get it in my garage

Hmm thats weird, the bushings on my truck designated, I got all the little pieces out put it back together and it shifts fine, some play in the shifter but to big deal.

If you take a screw driver, you can stick down in where the shaft came out of, and it might take some time, but you if you push things around correctly, you can get it out of gear. Remember that everything is opposite down in there. Everything gets pushed to the left, and up for reverse, as opposed to right, and down (due to having the pivot in there).

The shifter, from what I've tried, will not go back in, unless the tranny is in neutral. So, make sure it is in neutral when ever you take the shifter out, otherwise you have to monkey around with the screw driver.

It's difficult to tell from the fuzzy photos but it looks like the bushing that the shifter ball sits in.

If you have access to a lathe or are able to do some creative carving you might be able to creat your own from a plastic screwdriver handle.

thanks that helped a lot, got it out of reverse by just wiggling stuff in the tranny lol, going to get the bushings monday, so no driving all weekend

time to get more vehicles. i have three trucks so when one breaks i have a back up.:icon_thumby:

Edited title to remove cursing, and moved to proper forum.

For future reference, it HAS to be in neutral when you remove the shifter. You will just have to wait til monday for the parts. I work at Oreillys and i know we nor anyone else will carry tranny parts like this, not auto parts stores at least. Ford dealer should have all six or so pieces for maybe twenty bucks? While your that far in, pull the pass. side seat, center console and pull the carpet back enough to remove the access panel in the floor. If you look at the back of the shifter rails you will notice some rubber stoppers that may be leaking. Either replace them with metal freeze plugs or RTV them and put them back in and allow time to dry. This will save you a tranny later on. They leak fluid bad.
