Got Me A Bear!

Ahh doves are too beautiful to eat. Call me a fairy but I am getting a dove tattoo with an olive branch.

My friend shot his first bear when he was 16, how old are you again Koda? Good job, what you shoot it with? I don't hunt but I have no problem with people providing for a family, especially when you consider the cost of the bullet compared to the cost of meat in a supermarket.

I'm still only 17. Can't even hunt by myself yet. (gun possession laws.)

I was using my new Mossberg 500 pump loaded up with three inch Sabot slugs. Cost about 12 dollars for a box of 5, and that would be a little over two dollars for all that meat and the fur. Good deal. :icon_thumby:

My father was planning on selling the hide/head/paws from his bear to someone because we need the money. So far the highest offer is 50 dollars which is way under priced. I know places taking deer hide for that amount.

I must say I am not a big fan of hunting but, having said that, I am also fine with folks who hunt to use the meat. I love deer meat, but will not hunt myself to get it. I would hunt and kill if it was the only way to feed my family though...so I don't mean to dis our fine hunters, who do it for the meat and not simply for sport. Sounds like Koda is a real hunter not just a sports hunter. :) Hope you enjoy the bear meat Koda, and someone puts the rest of the hide to good use as well.
zactly,i only pick up my guns to hunt if i want free meat in the freezer.i've got a line on a smoker so the deer will be in danger again(jerky is the only way i like venison).good hog hunting here.my pops and grandpa used to bear hunt but i won't its too much like shooting for antler size to me.i always leave the big guys and albino bucks alone.

besides it just makes no sense to blow out the front hams with the heart and lungs just to have an intact head to put on a wall.the base of the skull is perfect most of the time

I got him right in the lungs as he took a step forward, one round and he took off about 20 yards into the brush back the way he came. Found him laying against a tree. My Mossy has a slug barrel and a scope (2.5x) and it was pretty powerful. Knocked him right down and left a good sized entrance/exit, but not big enough to ruin a lot of meat. I hit him a little bit high but it still went through both lungs. I wish he didn't take off like that though, 20 yards is a long way to drag 180 pounds uphill.

bear meat tastes great,just dont try to eat it cold(left overs)
like trying to chew an innertube.

great kill koda!

yeah a 4x4 quad with racks is your friend when hunting,lol.

Oh hell yeah, bear hunting looks like fun. bow or rifle?
Ive only ever had a bird permit...pheasant, geese etc. Makes me miss the midwest.

Shotgun, pretty much all I ever hunt with. I don't think I would go after bear with my bow, I don't trust myself to make a clean kill.

ok who said doves are too beautiful to eat hahahaa

Nice kill, and not for sport either....kudos

God damn that's good meat. I like it better than beef or venison. A little on the greasy side though.

I'm thinking of making a stew this weekend. Not a lot of broth, but with whole potatoes (small) some onion and carrots. I'm not sure what else. That might be it or I might throw in some corn who knows.

Found a recipe that sounds good. I don't know if I should do it the way it says with beef broth or if I should skip the frying step and make my own bear broth.

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

* 4 pounds bear meat
* 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon dried oregano
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 4 tablespoons margarine
* 2 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 onion, chopped
* 1 cup beef broth
* 4 bay leaves
* 2 pounds red potatoes, diced
* 1 pound fresh mushrooms
* 5 carrots, sliced
* 2 turnips, cubed

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, oregano, salt and pepper. Place bear meat in the bowl a little at a time and coat well.
2. Heat oil and butter in a large skillet. Fry the bear meat until browned. Let drain on paper towels.
3. Fill a large Dutch oven with 2 to 3 quarts water. Add bear meat, onions, beef broth, bay leaves, potatoes, mushrooms carrots and turnips. Cook on medium-high heat for 2 to 3 hours. Add more water as needed.

I'm going to cut out the turnips from the recipe, the carrots will be chopped about 3 inches long, and the potatoes will be whole potatoes, not diced or chopped. I'm also only making enough for me, my father and brother, and maybe a small portion for my girlfriend.
