Can anyone recommend a good brand of spark plugs and wires for a 4.0L OHV

Thanks

I have NGK wires and Bosch dual platinum plugs , I have no problems with them. NGK makes a good plug, can always go with Autolites...

motorcraft plug wires from rockauto.com

autolite dual platinum plugs form wherever has the best price.

I got motorcraft in mine and am happy with them. I think I have autolite wires.

Stay with Motorcraft double, or fine wire platinum plugs. I've gotten good results from NAPA wires made by Beldon. Bosch plugs and Ford's EDIS do
not work well together, they were causing a misfire in my Ranger, which were
installed by the previous owner.

Would you guys say Duralast or Bosch? The auto parts guy says they are made in the same factory?

I have used Bosch, Autolite and NGK plugs in my 1994 4.0 and I honestly can't tell a difference. They all worked well.

Bob, just out of curiosity, what specifically is supposed to be the problem with the Bosch-EDIS compatibility? I haven't experienced this.

There are 2 problems, first Bosch plugs seem to run way too hot, and they also have a problem with the opposite polarity spark of the EDIS.

Isn't "running too hot" a function of the length of the insulator? And therefore couldn't any plug with the incorrect insulator length run too hot?

All spark plugs function in the same basic way. So what, specifically, is different about the construction of the Bosch plug that makes it incompatible with the Ford EDIS system?

Please understand, I have no doubt of your veracity, but it's just that I have used Bosch plugs -- and other brands-- and I just don't see any difference in operation or in plug life among any of the brands.

Thanks again!

The bad news, the recommended part number by Bosch run too hot!

How often do you change your plugs to have tried so many different brands?

Just do a search, and you will see how bad Bosch run in Rangers! However,
Bosch run just fine in my gasoline Mercedes.

This has not been my experience.

Every 40-50,000 miles. My Ranger has 185,000 miles on it.

That's why I was asking you: no search turned up anything concrete, and you seemed to have something more specific to offer.

Bosch run just fine in my 2001 Subaru Forester -- that's what came in it from the factory. Ditto for my 1966 Volkswagen Beetle. Glad to hear they work well for your Mercedes:icon_cheers:

So would it be correct to say that, in your educated opinion, you would not use Bosch plugs in a Ranger because of past experience? Or, is it because of something you heard? Forgive me but I don't recall if you mentioned it previously -- have you used Bosch plugs in an EDIS vehicle?

Yes, Bosch plugs were causing a misfire in my 3.0L Ranger.....see post #5 in this thread. There have also been many other posts on how bad Bosch plugs run in Rangers.

Try running Motorcraft double platinum, or finewire platinum and they will run 100K miles without a problem (assuming no other problem to foul plugs)!!

Or do you just enjoy changing spark plugs?

I might do this next time -- I haven't tried the double platinums yet.

Not really, but there are worse maintenance tasks.:D

I find that of all the brands I have tried, the side electrode has eroded after 40-50,000 miles to the point that I start getting misfires. The plugs look fine otherwise and could probably just be regapped, but I figure if I have to pull 'em anyway, might as well replace 'em.

I have a 4.0...do you think perhaps it's an issue with the 3.0 motor? Have you run a 4.0 with Bosch plugs?
