Getting closer

Update...

I reset the timing yet again and managed to keep it running without the choke...but it was running rough...so I redid the timing and now it's back to running great when the choke is closed but as soon as i open the choke it dies...

The timing was actually off on tooth on the cam...hard to tell sometimes and had to look at it from several angles...

I'm starting to suspect the carb is bunged up...but I was planning on swapping in the holley 350 some day...trying to check out the resource manuals that Jorley posted but they don't seem to have 78 mustangs listed at all...and I can't find the carb that I have...

Any other ideas???

now that you got cam timing straight redo your distributor timing, start at 0 and advance till it runs right. i was gonna mention that it doesnt take lng for carbs to gum up inside where the float it. theres a pintle? that plugs thigns when the bowl is full and prevents more gass from gettin in, it could be stuck as opposed to gummed up, also fuel filter could be clogged, fuel pump weak go oevr it again from teh tank piece by piece to teh lower intake, and check everything you know. get a book and follow it if you must. theres a good chance that a simple solution is right in front of you.

Thanks FF...I just replaced both fuel filters (the electronic pump has one too) and tinkered with the timing...same thing...starts...as long as the choke is closed it will run fine...as soon as I open the choke it dies...

I also rechecked all the vac plugs and even disconnected the brake booster...changed the spark plugs and made sure they were gapped properly...tightened down the carb to the manifold (it was a bit loose) and reset the distributor timing...

No change...

I'm beginning to think that the carb may be gummed up or that there is a small leak at the intake...since tomorrow is Canada Day and we are off I might take the intake off and have a better look at the connections to the carb...

Yes, it usually is something simple...I've had little problem getting this setup to work and have dismantled it several times and put it back together (including removing the head)...I'm also thinking about putting the holy 350 on it and be done with it...this carb was off a 78 mustang and it worked great for the first two years...may need a rebuild but I don't really like the style of it and have wanted to change it for a few years but didn't have the need to do so...
