Clutch job. I was so happy that everything was going so smoothly, then bam... can't get the transmission out. There is no way in hell the y-pipe exhaust bolts are coming out but how did the shop do this two years ago then? I spun the trans both ways and angled and tipped to no avail. Has anyone tried to pull the tranny on a 93-97 ranger V6 4.0 (NO body lift) with the Y-pipe still in. I really don't want to have to cut the pipe but if that's the only way I'm using it as an excuse to get headers. Any suggestions?

stuck between the Y-pipe and the body

Hard to see from the pic but the threads on these bad boys are nearly non-existent.

I'm in the same spot...haven't got the bellhousing bolts out yet but when I do the y-pipe will be waiting for me. Y-pipe to manifold bolts are GONE. Car spent from 1990 to at least 1999 in Illinois. Damn that road salt.

I've pretty much accepted the fact that I will have to sawzall it out and then cobble it back together good enough to get 1 mile to the exhaust shop to have a completely new custom exhaust built. Hope you have better luck, I'd sure like to not have to do that.

Ran into a similar problem while trying to pull my motor. After breaking 2 sockets, a wrench, and busting my knuckles I ended up cutting the dam thing off. Corrosion is an s.o.b. to work on.

the y-pipe has to come out. there are no two ways about it.

i take that back, i suppose you could unbolt the body and jack it up..but that hardly sounds like less work.

you could just cut a section out of the crossover pipe along the radius arm bracket, then clamp/weld a peice of streight pipe back in there upon reassembly.

does the bell housing unbolt?is there enough room to get in there with a extension and socket?any time i took out the transmission i took off the bolts at the maniold, but i always had torches to heat up the nuts.

cut those bolts out and just put new ones in. grind the head off punch them out and put new nut and bolts on

easy enough on the y-pipe to cat bolts, but the manifold is too far up there to have much room to work. easier imo to saw out a section of the crossover pipe. just pick a spot where a guy can get a welder to when it comes time to seal 'er back up.

Take a sawz all or hack saw and cut the Ypipe most tranny shops do this and weld pipe back in when its reinstalled. They would rather cut the pipe then to break studs or even break the exhaust manifold.

how hard would it be to replace the factory manifold with headers? If I'm going to spend $50 for a weld why not 250 for a new exhaust. Does anyone know how the pacesetters fit?

Is this a 3rd generation ranger thing that you have to take the y pipe out? I've never had to on 2/4 door explorers with autos and manuals. Or bronco II's with both. Never pulled the Y pipe.

Y Pipe and tranny

I just went thru that myself, the best thing I found was to just heat up the exhaust bolts with torch,, will save many minutes of cussin and rackin knuckles, And my rigs are the 2 door sports 4wd, The Y pipes HAD to come out, there was no way around it to get the transmission out

Take the exhaust loose at the rear of the truck and rock the entire exhaust system and drivetrain down, away from the body. Might get you enough clearance.

I would like to call bs. It can be done. I have done it on 4 auto 4 doors and 2 manual sports. Never had to take the y out. Take your floor plate out and it gives you enough room. Drop the tail end of the engine/tranny down. It is enough room.

I have been able to get the tranny out without taking the Y pipe off on all my rbv's.

I will usually tip it back far enough to get the top of the bellhousing past the body seam, and then till it up to get the bottom past the y pipe.

Sometimes loosening the motor mounts so that it will tilt back some helps.
