I went to the local yard a couple days ago & the guy told me to go to the cash-for-clunker section....

I thought he was yankin my chain.....

So....I went....there's enuff cherry-bodied clunkers out there that I would need an 18 wheeler to bring em home!!!!

Sorry.....I don't have that problem....you know.....thinking....
by the way....seems like the only thangs that is legal is the thangs that used to be illegal.....like killing babies in the womb....and they're worried about someone turning a clunker into a good truck that gets good gas mileage that will last 30 years.....(grits teeth....wipes foam from mouth)

I jacked my own thread

They just can't sell the motors. You can still get complete rigs. I'm pretty sure.

I thought it was the trucks, becaus i heard they like black listed the vins. The dealers would get in major trouble if one of the trucks found its way back on the streets... or so I was told... But whats to say you didn't just do an excellent job repainting your truck. :D

Those trucks will never see the road again. It is illegal to re-register them. You can strip all the parts off them, but the bodies must be crushed and the engines must be destroyed. Anything else is fair game. I'm 150% positive on this.

They just can't be registered under the VIN that they were destroyed under. You'll also need a different engine, because they destroy the one it has. So basically you need two trucks to make one good one. But yes, there are a lot of excellent body parts off them.

From the official NHTSA website on CFC www.cars.gov

"The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train."

So.....no engine or xmsn or d-shaft or differential.....add 1 cherry body/chassis to my cart.....they can shred the drivetrain & VIN tag...no prob.

Where can I find the "Cash for Clunkers" clunkers? Are they being held at dealerships?

ya there was a 88 bronco 2 in my local yard...with 40,000 miles it...body was cherry and the frame still had paint...asked the yard if they would trade 5 trucks for that one...they said no...i even told them if all i did was have it rust in my own yard...and they still said no

No, you cannot reuse the body or chassis either. from the cars.gov website:
A disposal factility on the list must certify that it will dispose of the trade-in vehicle in compliance with the regulations......NOTE: While a disposal facility in one of the 50 States must be on NHTSA’s list to be eligible, that by itself is not enough. The listed disposal facility must also make specific certifications for each CARS trade-in vehicle it receives...A dealer may not transfer a CARS trade-in vehicle to a disposal facility unless the dealer receives the signed certifications from the disposal facility.....These certifications, which are legally binding on the disposal facility, include a certification that the CARS trade-in vehicle will be crushed or shredded onsite within 180 days of receipt of the vehicle, that all toxic or hazardous components will be removed and properly disposed of prior to crushing or shredding, and that the vehicle will not be transferred to any other disposal facility before it is crushed or shredded

So in other words, dealers can only bring vehicles to certified facilities, and those facilities must prove that they crushed the body within 180 days.

They're all in junkyards by now.

And time is running out on these too... Parts will be gone before too long.

sooooooooooooo....you can stock up on fenders, doors, hoods, glass, etc for your personal vehicle before they get crushed

I've already bought the rear axle out of a 99 F-150 that was CFC. Some of the ones in the yard also still have good engines (you can tell which ones did and did not get crap put in the oil pretty easy). I guess some dealers were just putting the tags and green paint on 'em and sending 'em off without actually destroying them. You know there was going to be at least some cheating going on with such a brainless program.
