gearing question for lifted ranger

Got a 94 4.0 with 32s and a manual. Got 4.56s and love them for running around town. I rarely drive on the highway so can't comment on that.

I don't really lack power, but there could be more running with 3.27's. I do enjoy running 55mph at about 1200rpm... I can take off faster than most other people on the road if I so choose to too..

Maybe my tach is messed up but I doubt it. I know my speedo is good, as judged by the radar-carts on the side of the highway. I know I'm 2-3mph over at 55 and spot on below 35 or so. When I got the truck I was actually looking forward to finding one of them to see how close my speedo was.

More towards the topic... referencing the tire & gear chart in the library, to run the same rpm going from 31 to 35 in my particular setup, I would really only need 3.73's, as I'm pleased with how it performs now. So 4.10's would really be the next notch and I might even be able to find a scrap truck with stock 4.10's. Swap my locker over and bolt it all in.

Backwoods, what do you get per gallon?

I'm only getting between 15-16mpg. But my driving consists of 18 miles per day with 18 stops (or more when I get caught behind 3 different school buses).. So its not the best reference.

Typo.. It's actually 14 miles per day..

have you ever drove a decently geared rig? I mean, I've drove a 93 explorer on 31's w/ 3.27's and it was TERRIBLE.. I could put it to the floor and take off faster than the rest of the traffic...but it sucked.

just like lower RPM's is not always better for gas mileage either...

4.0 v6,5spd,4.56 geared 8.8(both ends have lunchbox lockers) d35/8.8 spinning 33-12.50R15 Firestone Destination M/T's with 8-12 psi on the trail and 40 psi on the pavement. This combo is HARD to beat. LOVE the trail capability and road manners
