So i have a 98 4.0L auto ranger and im going to be putting 31s on it for winter, then im putting a 4inch lift during the winter and then i want either 32 or 33s in the spring. Im not sure what the gearing is now

Would i need to change the gearing to put 32s or 33s? What gearing would be best? and about how much does that cost on average?

4.10 would work for 31 or 32. it would work for 33's but according to the gear table im looking at it says that 4.27ish would get back to around stock performance. again, all this is according to a gear table im reading online.

does it have 4 10s in it now or is that something i have to try and find out?

go out to your truck and look at the door sticker and read what it says under axle and post it here

yeah have 3.73 l/s that should be ok for 33s with a 4.0 thats what i plan on running because gear swap isnt cheap

you could get away with 31'' with that gearing but it would be pretty sluggish with 33''

It all depends really. Just remember that since it's 4x4 you have to regear the front and rear axles. Find a local 4x4 shop and ask them how much they would charge you for a gear swap.

how does changing gearing ussualy cost?

Drive in-drive home prices are anywhere from $1200-1500. Those were the prices I was getting quoted at gear/driveline/4x4 shops. I had mine done by my buddy's gear guy...$150 per axle labor if I dropped off the axle. 1 day turnaround, My swap only ran me $700 parts and labor.

Honestly, all you need is 4.10. I suggest while putting on the 4" lift up front, put in a 4.10 stock front axle, since you've gotta drop the axle out anyway. And throw in a stock 4.10 axle in the back as well. This will be ALOT cheaper than regearing. and IMO, for 33's, if you can get away with 4.10s(just like all 4.0's can), I would just do the junkyard axle route at about $500 tops...it's not worth the extra expense. If you were to do the extra expense to have your current axles regeared, I would go 4.56 personally. That gives you the added option of throwing 35's on it and it still being very drivable.

3.73 ain't bad with 33's. But 4.10 is more perferred.

Downside to regearing: you can't just throw on stock tires and expect it to be drivable if you put in low gears(4.56, 4.88, 5.13). I'm having a hard time with that right now...4.88's and 33's is gonna be overkill, yet fun fun fun in the city and wheelin'. Same in reverse(larger tires on stock ratio).

but like i said you can run 33s and 3.73s on a 4.0 and save some money

If it's an automatic you could live with 4.10's. 4.56's will get the rpm vs. road speed pretty close to stock however. Since you've got to change the gears regardless, I'd say get 4.56's. If your truck has a manual tranny, then I'd definitely get 4.56's.
