well, i have a 94 ranger, with a 3.0 and 35's(i didnt put the tires on it). it has stock 3.73's, and i want to go with 4.56's. there arent a whole lot of performance shops around here, and i havent looked around a whole lot. however i did call a performance shop that is a little better than an hour away. they wanted $930 in labor, or around $1600 for parts and labor. that sounds a little steep to me. what do you guys think. by the way, it has a 7.5 in the rear, and a dana 35 up front.

They won't warranty it even when they supply parts? Then go somewhere else.

I'd expect $1000 including parts at a full service shop with a warranty, but I'm 2000 miles away.

Sounds about right for here, including parts & all. I believe I was quoted about $1300, with the largest chunk of that being the disassembly/assembly of the D35.

I thought is was high, looked at car-part.com. A couple of places wanted $700 for a rebuilt 8.8, 4.56 gear. Guess I had better be happy with what I got and live with it.

I payed $650 for labour on installation in two axles, with new gears, bearings and lockers that I supplied.

4.56 gears isn't even close to enough gear for a 3.0L on 35s, you'd be much better off with 5.13 gears. You might want to swap out the rear 7.5 for an 8.8" at the same time though, I wouldn't trust it myself with 35s and that ratio (pinion gets pretty small).

I paid 600$ for labor with a gear swap and lunchbox locker on both ends.

Paid 150$ for each gear set and 500$ for both lockers.

Everything new - Ebay

I got my gears and master install kits from Jim. TRSFabandOffroad. The shop i am looking at taking it to, wants roughly $800 to install it and will warranty there work for 1 year. They would warranty the parts as well if I had purchased from them, but it was a lot cheaper the other way.

You will be very unhappy with 4:56's. You need at least 4:88's with 35"s.
When I re-geared I took all my new gears, master install kits, Detroit Truetrac, empty Explore 8.8 and D35 to a shop. He installed the gears for $250 each.

Even 4.88 isn't really enough for that tire/engine combo. I'd go all the way to 5.13.

I have 5.13s with my 2.9L and wouldn't want anything taller (and my overdrive isn't even quite as deep as yours, too)

Ya, your right, I was thinking 33's. 5:13's for your 35's. Do it right the first time as it's an expensive mod.

I only pay for parts. My buddy is a dealer mechanic and has been doing this type of work for like 15 years straight :D.
