i have been gettin this crazy idea that I might wanna run 35's on my 86. What gears should i run? Im thinkin 4.88? Or is 35's on a dd just a little overboard? I will be running a 4.0. 35/8.8 so i don't know if that helps but input is appreciated.

with a 2.9 supplying the power right now, i'd be inclined to go 5.13's. even with the 4.0, as long as your dd activities are mostly in town and not long freeway runs, you should be fine with those gears. and when you decide to go to 37's the axles will be already set for that.
just my $.02.

okay but i dont think illl ever run 37's lol. it be awesome but for me thats too much tire for a small truck.lol and i wanna be able to get in and out of the thing without an elevator or trampoline. just another ? what about gears for a set of 33's? 5.13s still?

I would go to 35's on a ranger, and definitely go to 5.13's i don't think they will be too much at all. I can't wait till I have 5.13s and welded in my truck. Its gonna be fun

5.13's for town and trails
4.88's for interstate

i just cried a little when i saw ur pic of u bein pulled out by a titan :dunno:

No he is pulling the titan through the puddle, it is to scared to do it on its own.

5.13's period...
Even with 33's? wiukdnt that put me at like 3000 rpm at 65?lol

Funny thing is that he only pulled me out once, but i pulled him out at least 4 times with mine, AND I went throungh the mud holes he got stuck in.

That's a good one but the owner of that pickup is the reason why i was pulling it through the puddle.lol

i have a 2.9l with a D35 and 8.8 and 5.13's and its perfect off road and very drivable on the streets. go with 5.13's!

With the 4.0L;

33's I'd suggest 4.56's or even 4.88's if you don'w see many highway miles.

35's go 5.13's period

i plan on 33's on my 4.0/a4ld-- and i plan on 4.88's. the difference in the RPMs is like 300 at 65mphs, no biggie.

ha, my truck came stock with 4.10's so its ready for when i throw in that 4.0 in a couple years, and im never going bigger than 32's. but until then im puttin on 31's with 4.10's and a 2.3l 4 banger.

That was my first option.

I will be driving it quite a bit on the road, but i can try and limit by driving the wifes car. :(

What size tires you runnin? Is there any difference in how high of revs you pull at 65?

You have a stick or auto?

With the auto, I have to agree with everyone else here, 5.13s w/35s no matter what, even on the interstate. If you have a stick (M5OD), then it's gonna be between 4.88 & 5.13... I'd still go 5.13 if you plan to be wheeling it a lot, 4.88 if you frequently run on the freeways and like to bust rural speed limits.

(reason for the above is the auto has a little steeper OD gear, .75:1 vs. .79:1 for the M5OD).

With 33s, then simply go down a step on your gearing (auto = 4.88, stick = 4.56 or 4.88)
