I'm sorry, I don't understand which motor you put in.
I have a 91 ranger 4x4 4.0l 5-speed and the stock gearing is 3.73. That doesn't mean that is what's in your truck. If your new motor is a 4 cylinder and has 3.73 I'd leave the gears alone. The smaller engine won't have the torque to push your truck at those speeds with lower gearing.
Also there is a way of getting your gear ratio without tags or stickers, in case they are missing. Jack up one side of the truck, having blocked the front wheel and transmission in neutral. Count rotations of the drive-shaft vs tire rotation. You want to have one rotation of the drive-shaft, if the tire turns 3 and 3/4 turns you have 3.73 gearing, etc.
A vin number would help to find the original gearing ratio, but not if it's been changed.

my new motor is a turbo diesel so it has plenty of torque trust me. and im assuming I have stock gear ratio.

im just curious as to what the gear ratios were that are available in a 90s or late 80s ranger. And if any of the differentials are interchangeable.

I'm not a guru with axles but AFAIK
3.08 [uncommon], 3.45 [common], 3.73 [common], 4.10 [uncommon]
The d-35 will not interchange with the d-28 or the hybrid.
You have the d-35 front axle if your 91 truck came stock with a 4.0l. Other front ends that came in rangers are;
the d-28 came in pre 90 and in small engine configuration, ie under 4.0l
The hybrid front axle was in some rangers from 90 to 95.
At the top of the page is a button labeled "info-technical". It has some good info if you dig into it a little. Also search the magazine for articles.
A possibly cheaper way of achieving the same effect; install taller tires. You will lose on city mileage slightly as there is now a larger, heavier tire to spin up to speed.

also, does the m50d and the fm146 have different gear ratios? I had a bad m50d when I bought my truck so I replaced it with a fm146.....

I was looking at this chart a few minutes ago, and if I read it correctly according to it the M50D is has a higher gear ration then the fm146 but only by a little bit right? how much difference would it make it I went back to the original m50d? sorry I don't know much about transmissions.

my truck handles my gravel roads just fine at 80 MPH. there are a few i have to slow down for due to ruts/holes, but theres a few that are better than a lot of our highways up here. so those i can run safely at 60-80 mph. i dont care if your truck gets squirly on your gravel roads. Mine doesnt.

Why would you ever go that fast on any road? We have at least one dumb kid a year air lifted because he totalled his Truck/Jeep going 40-50mph down our logging roads which are very well manicured and wide gravel roads. Last year one kid tagged our feller buncher around a corner.

The rest of them either take a tree pretty hard or roll over good on a corner. The ones we catch get boxed in with our unused equipment and we dont let the vehicle go for days sometimes. Be responsible your not always going to crash alone. You can easily take someone with you.

I agree with your and others sentiments. However I think that [gov. and insurance subsidized] we should be training new drivers on how to drive and handle their vehicles rather than give out speeding tickets. A one day course would do so much more to prevent accidents than any radar could hope to. You don't see radar on side roads such as what you're talking about.
Personally I think speed limits are 20% too low around me.

im not trying to go fast just create less stress on my motor. and not even a lot just a little so I didn't know if that little bit would make much difference. im going up to 33's here soon I have 31's on it now. I just want to lower my rpms is all. Im a volunteer firefighter I know how stupid teenagers are. but this is no race truck haha its a nice clean diesel swap and its like 45mpg efficient and I want to create a little less stress.

That really is the #1 reason driving has become so dangerous. Uneducated drivers whether it be not understanding the physics of how a vehicle performs or just no understanding of how the rules of the road play a major role in keeping traffic flowing and safe.

I wouldnt go as far as to say around my area that speed limits are too low. While some of the roads have nothing for miles and are very straight the speed limits are still 25-35mph for the reason of animals crossing, hunters crossing, ATVs/Dirtbikers riding, and just a combination of you dont know whats going to pop out of the thick brush on the side of the road and cause a driver to react in an unknown manner.

Everyone shares the road. An educated driver understands that and the fact that they can negatively impact anyone elses life on the roadway they are sharing at any given time with something as large as an automobile.
