I got a few alerts today about a "gas strike" on May 2nd.

I don't get it.

Everyone is just going to fill up the day before. Everyone will drive the same amount. Everyone will just use the same amount of gas. The gas companies will make the same amount of money.

This is just another way people try to feel good about something with out really doing something great.

The only way to get the point across to the gas companies is a violent, bloody, revolution.

I dunno...
I wonder if it has something to do with the daily net worth of the oil companies and devaluation of their stocks or something on the following day. That's the only thing I can imagine.
I mean, you're right, everyone will still drive and use the same amount of gas even if no one purchased gas on that particular day.

I'm always down for starting a riot.

We are always going to need gas, it's inevitable, oil companies will always be rich,
Whoever supplies for the demand, sets the prices

Not buying gas for one day will make the price jump up, because the oil companies will raise the prices the next day because everyone will need a full tank, cha-ching cha-ching...

ya I my girlfriend got a text about this tonight...then I proceeded to argue with her about how its pointless..

The only way anything would happen is if everyone quit driving for a day, its all supply and demand. but even then I dont think anything would happen, and if it did it probly would go up. but I dont know Jack about that kinda stuff..... All I kno is be glad its at least available, and cut back on my driving.

exactly! i have heard of people doing this before and it makes no sense! it MIGHT make a difference if noone drove for a day, but if you still drive youre still going to need to buy gas! im glad there are some logical people out there.

The only way for something like this to work, isn't for people not to fill up on one specific day, its for people to go a month or two without buying gas, that would be the only way for the oil companies to lower the price of gas. But since you're not going to get people to cut driving out of their lives, that just not going to happen. These "Don't buy gas on this day, strikes" have been happening quite a bit, it seems like once a week, I've noticed that after everyone that happens nation wide, and not city wide, the gas prices go up. They go up to make back some of the lost profits from the previous day. I'm 20 and I have more common sense them many of the people who follow these "gas strikes" they've been around for as long as gas has been pumped into cars.

If we want to really cut gas usage down, we need to start buying cars with better gas mileage. This will fly in hte face of the suburban soccer mom who bought the Lincoln Navigator to take her two kids to school and pick up groceries when a Ford Fusion would have been more than sufficient for that task. Seriously, if you are not towing a large trailer every day, do you really need a large SUV? even down to the crossovers which are much better on gas and ride better as well, do you really need an SUV for most of your daily driving? And mind you, this is just a start, not a fix.

Plus with China's economy booming, that creates even more of a demand, so prices go up. This is a huge part of it.

But for the average American or Canadian, if you want to lower your fuel costs, look at what you are driving. I commute 30 minutes one way to school everyday and I have a choice of two vehicles to do it in: A 94 Dodge Intrepid with a 3.3 and a 97 Ranger Supercab 4x4 with a 4.0. The Dodge has much of the paint peeling off the roof, and is only the basic model with absolutely no frills. But I drive it to school everyday because it costs me a whole hell of alot less to keep gas in it.

I will always keep my Ranger and in a month or so I am getting rid of the Dodge and moving to Indiana. The Ranger will be my dd, but I will also be living 1/4 mile from my workplace, and my wife will be able to take public transportation into her work.

just my $.02

one way it might work is if we only bought gas from a certain company. we were debating this at work.

yeah i've heard this one too, kinda makes since. If you could convince everyone to boycott one company they would have to lower prices to get competative again (in theory) and then other companies would have to follow suit to stay competative with this one company so gas prices in general would fall...how this would get done is somewhere between wishful thinking and a yeti molesting a marmot, probably ain't gonna happen.

but just maybe that yeti will find love...

mopeds with sidecars and trailers... thats the ticket right there boys:yahoo::yahoo:

And winter tires and chains for up here in the North in winter. Hmm, you may have something there. At least they would work for when there isn't enough snow or ice for the sleds. :headbang:

I am getting my Bicycle out again, and using it to go to work, and for other misc things. My brother owns a bike shop in Buffalo (Campus WheelWorks!), and he and most of his friends either don't have or rarely use their cars. It's a little more challenging here...Lots more hills, But eh, what's a little more exercise. The truck is seeing less use. Only when I need to either haul stuff or go on a longer trip do I use it. The F150 is barely getting used, esp since We replaced the Windstar with a 07 Taurus.

Combine that with the solar power, only 2 shows, and much more homegrown food this year, and I will be using less fuel to survive.

Well as of May 6th, I am putting my Insurance on hold and not driving the truck again until mid-August. But I am filling up tomorrow, May 2nd...shame on me. Because I am going to visit my dad before I sail for 3 1/2 months. So I am doing my part to help save on fuel costs.

Wait...We will be stopping on the school ship to take on 60,000 gallons of number 2. And when I get aboard the commercial boat I will be on, heaven knows how much fuel oil we will take on every 2-3 days. Oh well, my truck wont be using gas.
