I am getting my Bicycle out again, and using it to go to work, and for other misc things. My brother owns a bike shop in Buffalo (Campus WheelWorks!), and he and most of his friends either don't have or rarely use their cars. It's a little more challenging here...Lots more hills, But eh, what's a little more exercise. The truck is seeing less use. Only when I need to either haul stuff or go on a longer trip do I use it. The F150 is barely getting used, esp since We replaced the Windstar with a 07 Taurus.
Combine that with the solar power, only 2 shows, and much more homegrown food this year, and I will be using less fuel to survive.
definatly try a hub motor with a good agm setup...
Shoeboy/// The only way for something like this to work, isn't for people not to fill up on one specific day, its for people to go a month or two without buying gas, that would be the only way for the oil companies to lower the price of gas. But since you're not going to get people to cut driving out of their lives, that just not going to happen. These "Don't buy gas on this day, strikes" have been happening quite a bit, it seems like once a week, I've noticed that after everyone that happens nation wide, and not city wide, the gas prices go up. They go up to make back some of the lost profits from the previous day. I'm 20 and I have more common sense them many of the people who follow these "gas strikes" they've been around for as long as gas has been pumped into cars.
thats about it too. we could cut use for 6 months in half and china and the rest of the world would just surge with (this is reletive) lower priced fuel due to lower demand, canada would just ship it there instead of here..its gonna get used in any case. simply put the near non existant lincoln navigators in china would become more available for the new class of chinese soccer mom.

and remember most of our imported oil is from canada...have you hugged and thanked a canadian lately?...they are busting thier butts to get the job done mining coal for china and shipping our sorry asses crude...those are the guys we would screw the most...like back during the mad cow thing...

97RangerXLT/// If we want to really cut gas usage down, we need to start buying cars with better gas mileage. This will fly in hte face of the suburban soccer mom who bought the Lincoln Navigator to take her two kids to school and pick up groceries when a Ford Fusion would have been more than sufficient for that task. Seriously, if you are not towing a large trailer every day, do you really need a large SUV? even down to the crossovers which are much better on gas and ride better as well, do you really need an SUV for most of your daily driving? And mind you, this is just a start, not a fix.
Plus with China's economy booming, that creates even more of a demand, so prices go up. This is a huge part of it.
But for the average American or Canadian, if you want to lower your fuel costs, look at what you are driving. I commute 30 minutes one way to school everyday and I have a choice of two vehicles to do it in: A 94 Dodge Intrepid with a 3.3 and a 97 Ranger Supercab 4x4 with a 4.0. The Dodge has much of the paint peeling off the roof, and is only the basic model with absolutely no frills. But I drive it to school everyday because it costs me a whole hell of alot less to keep gas in it.
I will always keep my Ranger and in a month or so I am getting rid of the Dodge and moving to Indiana. The Ranger will be my dd, but I will also be living 1/4 mile from my workplace, and my wife will be able to take public transportation into her work.
just my $.02

spdcrazy/// mopeds with sidecars and trailers... thats the ticket right there boys
excellent, this is definatly what needs to happen where possible and its nice to see it recognized for what it is. for commuting i do the same thing and run a wheezer that gets stuck on flat ground in the winter

but emmissions compliant mopeds with side cars for most commuting would save shit tons of fuel.....and it would happen at 15-20 dollars a gallon...
sure seems like things are changing, and possibly for the better...
nice.
just remember one thing.....oil is oil, for the most part it all gets dropped in one spot and refined from there. boycotting one place in length could have an effect, but the pot still has to stay full, so when that one place cant keep up they have to buy what is available on the market.
which will be scorned oil.....cutting no slack...
