i just bought a new 08 fx4. its got 4:10 in the rear, and a 4.0 under the hood. all my driving is in town. I bought a super chip which boasts 10% better gas milage. im getting about 310 kilometers to the tank. Does it get better.

The specs for my engine are the same specs as the 92 4.0'???wtf

Anyone have any suggestions. Im not rich so mods have to be inexpensive. Im not a mechanic so they have to be fairly simple. I know that limits me, but i'll deal.

sounds about right for the heavier 4wd and 410's, my 3.0L gets 400km 50 a tank

you could polish and port your intake's out yourslf but will give you a little more mpg

I only get 14-15 MPG. Not sure what that is in Canadian.

will the lower gearing make that big of a difference?

Well, the smaller the gear number, the more the engine has to work. Myself, I'm sure if I went 4.10:1 I would pick up a few more MPG in the city... but the majority of my driving is at highway speeds (60mph).

I just bought a 03 Ranger FX4 and it has the 4.10 gear and I run the 245 75 16's. My first tank pulled 20+ mpg and that was with some town driving.

my 93 ranger gets about 14.5 highway and i've got 31's, a 4" lift on it, and 3.73 gears... but city i drop to about 12/13 if i don't punch it too hard(have dipped down to 11)

what kind of chip did you buy?

hook a vacuum hose to the engine & set the gage on your dash...drive on a strech of level road at 60 mph and notice what the reading is...any changes you make to the tire diameter or gearing will cause the vacuum gage to read lower OR higher. Higher is gooooood / lower is baaad.

not sure i have ever heard of that kinda milage out of a 4.0? i believe the 03 didnt come with a 410, but i could be wrong.

you lost me when i opened the hood?????

That gas mileage does sound very poor. My math isn't great but I'm guessing that you are achieving roughly 10 US mpg (perhaps a little more). The 4.0 in your 08 is different from the one in your 1992, your 08 has an OHC. One factor could possibly be weather or not your engine is broken in yet. How many miles does it have on it? Is your transmission manual or automatic? I found out after surfing the forums that I've been shifting too low and when I changed that habit I gained about 1.5mpg. I have an 03 (xlt) and checked the axle code. It came stock with 410s.

jdanger- Be proud of 20+. The most I have ever got is 20.2mpg on a long highway trip going between 70-75. How fast (slow) were you going?

I've been averaging 14-15 in mixed driving more often 15 now that its warmer. Are you letting your engine warm up on the first start? How much are you using 4wd (we had a blizzard here 2 weeks ago so I had to use it)? Worst I have gotten was 12mpg and that was letting my truck warm up every morning, using 4wd and shifting too low.
