gas milage

Dang, on my 91 4.0 with 180K miles and needing a tune-up I easily get 15mpg in the city, and 18 on the highway... I could probably get 20+ highway after my tune-up and 18 in the city... Keep it as close to 2500rpm as you can all the time and you will get the best mileage...

i also got a high idle problem so ima thinking that is contuiting to the problem

Mine idles at 1k rpm... Hangs around 1500rpm until I come to a stop... I still get 15-18 mpg easily...

My new/used 4.0L Picks up around 19-20mpg's with mixed driving. its a 2002 4x4 extended cab 5-speed manual with 4:10's and 245/75/16's. My dad has a 2002 FX4 manual with 4:10s as well and he picks up pretty close to the same mpg's with his truck. i was actually kind of impressed with that number when i first calculated the mpg's. my 1998 3.0L with a 5-speed manual and 3.73's picked up 17-18mpgs, so it was a win/win for power and economy.

There are a bunch of simple things to make your fuel economy go up. Keep your tires inflated to spec's, make shure your air filter is not compleatly trashed, keep up on oil changes and fluid changes to keep them up to date, the simple upkeep stuff. another thing is to "power drive" in other words avoid forcing the truck to come screaming out of the hole, take your time and let it slowly get up to speed, and when you come to stops, try hard to "within reason" to do a somewhat rolling stop, when the truck dosnt have to come from being completely stopped it will help your economy as well. also with yours being a newer truck if your 4.0 isnt broke in yet, your going to do worse mpg's, and of course cold winter weather will not help your fuel economy at all. My truck got down to 15-16 in some of the colder weeks this past winter.

im getting about 15 or 16 highway. im going to take it for a full tune up this summer and am going to be replacing/upgrading some things. hopefully it will boost my mpg some

My 1991 4.0L manual got 20 mpg at 75 mph, 24 mpg driving 65 mph, and about 18 mpg driving in the city if I didn't punch the accelerator

You seriously should be able to get more than 11/15 mpg, unless you drive like a maniac, lol... I don't know about 24mpg, I've never done it, but on a properly maintained 4.0, 20 mpg is not hard to acheive... It's not some magic number, I've gotten 20mpg all the time...

Yep, I hit 21mpg several times with my Explorer. I've tapped 27mpg with the 2.3 Ranger when taking it easy on the highway. Are you guys calculating based on fuel used or dividing by tank size?

i run her really ****in close to dry then i put 20gal in reset the miles and then drive till empty so thats gal. used:dunno: ran out today final number is 11.7 mpg

I have done it both ways, and it ends up right in the same ballpark almost every time. In fact i just filled up today and with last weeks colder temp's (northern michigan) i still picked up 18.748 mpg with close to 30% of that driving stop and go. so thats pretty darn close to what it usually pegs.:icon_thumby:
