I have moved (finally) to the country. Getting kind of a late start before
winter on getting my shop ready. I only got as far as insulating the one
end, but I've fashioned tarps and plastic for walls for my main area.
No time to get a wood stove installed. I was wondering if anyone
can suggest the best 110v heater to at least take most of the
chill off. There is no 220v service, so I'm a bit limited. Would like
to avoid lp/natural gas if possible. Main area is approx. 10 x 10.
I've done some research, seems 50/50 consensus on some of the
ones I've looked at on the web. It's gonna be a long winter here
in Iowa, as always, but I definitely don't want to be stuck in the house !!!
thanks for your time fellas,

Space heaters, Bro!!! My mom has three of them (Lowes) and they are great.
Just don't leave them unattended or leave them with pets who can know them over and start a fire!!! Unplug them when you go somewhere. Cheap prices on them and there are so many types to choose from. That should hep until you get the 220 installed and then get a real heater.
Never leave a stove on to warm you up when or you are not home or in bed. Gas stoves can be dangerous and the same with wood burning stoves. SAFETY FIRST!!

We use kerosene torpedo heaters and propane for the most part. Also have some electric space heaters as well. Cost is a wash, everything is expensive in a building with no insulation. We have run diesel fuel in the heaters too... the fumes are pretty bad though.

Thanks guys. The main area IS insulated, I'm looking for suggestions
for perhaps a specific good space heater.

I would go with kerosene if the price of fuel hasn't gone up too much...I heated a double garage a few winters ago and it cost about $300...and that was keeping it shirt-sleeve warm for most of the day...

I wouldn't recommend electric because they can jack up your heating bill amazingly fast...unless you're on equal billing...

Kerosene is what I would recommend too. THe space heaters are awesome, but they drag the most power when turning them on, most of them have a thermo stat which shuts them off and on pretty often, itll kill your bill.

Since you're only heating a 10x10 area, I'd go with a small kerosene heater like this:

Or a propane heater like this:

Or electric like this:

I personally own the propane one I listed and use it with a small BBQ grille tank. On high it last about 8 hours and it will make my 8x10 shed VERY warm, very quickly with no insulation. The kerosene one I mentioned might even be a little too big for your area.

Whatever you choose... be careful... in that small of a space you can burn up all the oxygen in the air really fast.

TRUE I forgot to mention, If you use any kinda fuel heater it needs to be WELL ventilated. I have a small space heater from walmart, but like I said before, very expensive to run and its directional pretty much.

Be sure you keep the area ventilated well if you use the kerosene. I've used them in the past and they work great, but you'll get nutty in a hurry if you don't ventilate the garage.

where i live, kerosene is well over $3/gallon. electric space heaters cost an arm and a leg on the elec. bill. i like this one:

can also be easy to use in case of power outage and no heat in the house. should last a lifetime with proper care. and, again, ventilate.

.

Just throw some gas and lighter fluid in a bucket and add a match. It will be nice and warm and will burn for ever.

principally no kerosene, propane or electric fair

I heat mine with a warm morning kerosene heater and when close the door it keeps it nice and toasty all day long! and it has a loft and is about 12 x20, Just ask Froggy. And I can run pretty much all day on 1 fill up if I turn it down a little. There's my 2 cents.
