Get a load of this:

They want to BAN lead ammunition because it is a harm to the environment.... uhm.... uhm.... how? You shoot to kill, or you shoot a target, in which the bullet is now under ground, or in the target, or in a target wall (like at a shooting range).

How can it be harmful to the environment if hunting is where you shoot to kill, not shoot to wound and walk away?

I think its a little funny, haha

It's Obama's way to ban ammo all together. You don't have to ban weapons if no can get ammo. I've been seeing this coming for a long time now. That's why I can find any decent 7.62x39 ammo! Bastards!

Sorry RK, not trying to tread jack. It just pisses me off!

you can have it imported =P

and you can always refill and reuse the cases and make the bullet heads quite easily........

it is because lead is a toxic metal, and when it goes into the ground it leaches into the ground. (granted, a few pounds of bullets spread over a wide area I don't think is going to do much environmental damage but over time the lead adds up. and that is the reason)

car tire weights are also under fire for this reason. and personally, I think that a stainless steel weight works just as good as lead, so I can see this.
see this article: http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/Archive/2010/February/04.html

as for the bullets, I dont' think there is any real good replacement for lead, as it is soft and hard metals make the round more armor peircing. possibly plastics or polymers if they can get weight behind them.

oh, and wait until they go after the fishing industry with this one... most fishing weights are lead too...And the "progressives" already want to ban fishing in inland streams and waterways...

Yep, buying all my ammo now, so our sorry excuse for a government can't take it away.

ammunition has an expiration date, btw, haha,

PLASTIC?
I can see my gun getting a melted bullet ever first or second shot now...

Not necessarily... properly stored ammunition can last a VERY long time.

At kodiaks outdoor shooting range we have a creek that runs salmon. Those fish get lead poisoned, if you know what i mean.

In New Hampshire at least all fishing weights under 1 ounce can not be made of lead. apparently the birds were eating the little ones. Not a bad idea, we just use tin ones now.

no ammo does expire now, the powder is designed to degrade after about 10 yrs, this as I understand it is from the "change" that we all needed.....

What do you mean by decent? As far as quality goes, they're all pretty much the same...unless you want to buy the $15 to $20 remington or federal 20rnd boxes. The cheapest new stuff I've been finding it for $3.99 per box of 20, and it shoots just as good as the rest of them.

Oh, and about ammo expiration dates. I have no clue if that's true or not. Maybe for the newest stuff, but I try to keep away from new stuff unless I find decent gun show deals or really good sale prices. I'd say that the majority of ammunition, when properly stored, can last about a century or more. I've heard of people shooting stuff well over 100 years old, and i've got some 1917 (93 years old) WW1 surplus 30-06 and 45acp that shoots just as good as new.

Actually it isn't the "powder" more properly called "Propellant"
that degrades, it's the primers.

Because of various other lead restrictions they have changed the chemical composition of the primers, formerly a the active component was a compound called "Lead Styphnate". now they use a more environmentally friendly
compound based on Bismuth, whch doesn't have as long a shelf life.

I'm not worried, I bought what I reasonably expect to be a lifetime supply of primers in the early 90's during what shooting people call "the great Clinton primer scare of 1993"

I was told this by by old youth minister who works for what used to be olin mills, now st marks powder. They produce roughly 30% of all ammo used here in the us by civilians and military. He told me that obama (and the cronies that go with him) made them, change the actual propelant to degrade in approximately 10 yrs, now he is either lying, or something is actually going on, I'm not anywhere near a chemist so I couldn't tell you the difference my grandfather bought 30 yrs ago that I still use or the ones I buy and use today...
