FULL Tailgate protector

Sounds more like you "abuse" your truck instead of "use" if you kinked your tailgate twice. How do you even kink a tailgate other than getting in a wreck with a telephone pole in reverse at high speeds lol??? Wouldn't be hard to cut a piece of steel plate in a rectangle to cover your tailgate. Not trying to be a dick but it seems obvious.

I am 240lbs and while loading a couch into the truck the tailgate bent and then it was all over. The constant flexing kinked the gate in 2 spots. If you think that is abuse, then I dont know what to tell you

I use the truck. Kinked the tailgate in 2 spots

Obviously. I use mine to, but I have never manged to bend the tailgate.

I bent my bed once, just not the tailgate.

Were you loading the couch by dropping it from a 5 story window?

Some if this seems to be uncalled for. He kinked his tailgate and wants ideas on where to get something to strengthen and protect it. The word "abuse" is very subjective. There is no reason to harass him about how it happened.

Get over it guys.

I was just wanting some input on how it got kinked. I never seen one get kinked unless it was involved in an accident. 240 is not that heavy and the tailgate should easily handle that. couches now a days are cheap wooden frames with upholstering. Stepping on the tailgate with a half a couch (doubt you picked up the whole thing by yourself) wouldn't cause it to kink unless it has been previously abused, just saying. As far as a tailgate protector? Bumpers work good for that. If you want to cover one or both sides then I would use some sort of steel. I like to get steel from the recycling yard here in town because they only charge 14 cents a pound and there's a steel shop right next door so there's always nice sheets of galvanized or diamond plate steel on hand. OR..... go find a pick and pull and get a better tailgate. probably only $20 for a new tailgate from there.

Hmmm, that's exactly what I want to build a big media blast cabinet.
do those come in 4' x 4' size?
what city are you in?

there's always vibranium, if it works for Captain America, it should work for you

The recycling place I am talking about is called innovative recycling and its in Galion. Its a small place but I've been lucky a few times and scored really good stuff from the scrap pile. It is probably 1.5-2 hours from Toledo area.

wow. A recycling yard next to a fab shop? That would be awesome. I'm fortunate enough to have a decent metal fab shop nearby. They are a big operation, but still family owned and operated. I drive the truck when I go up there and park where the guys can see it from their big roll-up door. They get interested in the truck and I get good deals, sometimes invited to raid the scrap bins under the shears.

This is kind of what I was thinking too. I have used by dropped tailgate to push dumpsters around, set engines and 55G barrels of oil filters on, my one buddy who is 300 lbs has jumped on it, I backed into a post on my deck with a bed full of wood, and that bent my box, but didn't even dent my tail gate.

But .... It's been a long weekend and we didn't have anything better to do

I'm a regular on US 23, maybe a short detour to the east is in order. :icon_thumby:

NOw I can't guarantee you will find what you are looking for. I was there a few weeks ago and the scrap pile was MASSIVE and full of junk because they have been swamped and don't have enough people (useful people) to get clearing the junk from the pile. It's been a long while since I looked for sheets of metal because I don't need it. Normally just looking for things with wheels or motors. Last year I picked up some small snow throwers that actually worked for a few bucks. Cleaned them up, cleaned carbs and sold them for a profit or used them. Like I said, sometimes you find what you are looking for and other times the pile is cleaned up and very little to look through. [/I]
