well it started yesterday while going down a washboard road i decided to nail the throttle and the truck started spitting and sputtering. i stopped and checked the filter and it was clogged, i got a tow home where i then replaced the filter. ran good, went down the same washboard road and it did it again, cleaned the checked the filter and it was clean. do you think it could be an intermittent fuel pump problem? on the hard road its fine. its a 92 explorer with a 4.0.

Was there any pressure in the line when you disconnected it?

Just something to look at. I don't really know how you would diagnos an "intermittent" fuel pump problem.

Would it be possible to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and run it into the cab and then drive the truck to see if you loose fuel pressure when the sputtering happens?
I know there's a test fitting on the fuel rail around the intake, where you an hook the gauge/ tester up.

yea ill run a fp test and see what happens.

Check your connections at all the Plugs going to the fuel pumps sounds like a loose connection.

maybe if the hits are hard enough from the washboard road....you may be tripping the safety cut off switch for impact. check that
