Fuel Pump or Fuel Pressure Regulator?

Got the starting fluid. Hooked up the fuel pressure gauge to the test valve. Held throttle plate open, sprayed starting fluid inside throttle body for about 5 seconds. Tried to start, floored the gas pedal, the engine ran as expected like when you floor the gas pedal and died a few seconds later.

The fuel pressure only got to about 8 PSI inspite of repeated attempt to pressurize the system. I think at this point, I will call this a failed fuel pump.

Looking to purchase Airtex fuel pump assembly. Is it reliable aftermarket? I know buying car parts lately is more like a guess. You never know if it will be good for a long time. OEM is too expensive.

Next step, preparing to remove the truck bed.

I just picked up an Airtex, affordable for me at this time.

The bed is prepped up for removal, liner removed, the bed bolts soaked in penetrating oil for 4-5 days, tried to break them loose yesterday, it seems to be coming along but have not fully removed them.

Here is the twist, my friend who is supposed to help with lifting the bed got into a situation where his arm is now in a cast. After removing the tailgate, can 2 person lift the bed easily ? 6 foot bed, step-side style box.

If we can move it back 2 feet, will that be enough to work on the fuel pump.

I saw a video where they tipped the bed like a dump truck, will that work on the ranger?

(for whatever reason, garages want to drop tank instead of lifting the bed. I think a lift with the variable position arm that allows you to position it on the lifting points under the vehicle is perfect for this task, but they don't seem to see it that way)

Two people can lift it really easily. It is more awkward than it is heavy. I didn't remove my bed all the way, I just set it on the rear tires and the bumper.

Finally. Fuel pump replaced, truck starts right away. Engine running fuel pressure at schrader valve is 38 PSI. (Fuel pump is original to the truck)

Thanks to all those who pitched in troubleshooting. Will take it for mandatory state emissions inspection and see how it drives. Major tune up done too.
