Fuel pump intermittent crank no start

I have a problem with my 2000 Mazda B2500, where it seems like the fuel pump doesn't turn on sometimes (possibly due to the cold weather). I swapped out the relay for a different one and that did not make a difference. I also checked the inertia switch, and it was fine. I used a DMM to figure out how much current the pump was pulling and it was pulling 15A (way over the 10A limit) and was wondering if its too high. I think it's due to the fuel pump seizing and not being able to turn over in low battery voltage, since sometimes if a battery charger is hooked up, the fuel pump will turn on and I will be able to start the truck. Once it has warmed up though, I have no trouble starting it back up.

I just wanted to check for any other suggestions before pulling the fuel tank and replacing the pump.

How many miles?

Quality of gas?

Has the tank ever ran dry?

You can try Marvel Mystery oil, 4oz per 10 gallons of Gasohol, to help lube the fuel pump, and to offset the effects of ethanol.

MMO is a great upper cylinder lubricant, and hopefully give your fuel pump more miles, but really you are just buying time, that fuel pump is going to need replaced!

Marvel Mystery Oil and Techtron complete fuel system cleaner are the only things that go into my tank!

Also I recommend you use a OEM pump supplier, aftermarket fuel pumps are just crap.

200k miles so it's time to change the pump. Going to do it tomorrow. I use mostly shell or Costco gas. Never run dry.

Check your fuel filter also, might be plugged up, have to change it anyways.

I had the same problem on my Explorer. (Fuel pump intermittently not turning on) I swapped the fuel pump relay and that didn't solve it, so I thought it wasn't a relay. Turns out the problem was the relay for the ECU. Bad ECU relay means the computer intermittently doesn't turn on. If the ECU doesn't turn on, the fuel pump doesn't turn on. That problem was a bitch to diagnose; I was very glad when I finally figured it out.

Yup got it all changed, boy it everything easy to do with the bed off.

Everything works fine now, just have a shudder with the power steering pump probably because the truck was sitting for a week. Need to purge it tomorrow morning.
