Front Diff. & U-Joints

ADSM... on 2 Counts, you are "BANG ON !!!!!"

1) the joints on a vice, dead on, poped the top cap out in 2 light hits.

2) the slip joint was, (Still Is) frozen solid with crap (I would assume that is the reason for the failure in the first place...

+1 on both counts ! (Dam page says I have to spread some around before I can rep you again....)

Black Demon, I'm going through the ENTIRE front end, It's in the garage now, do it right the FIRST time..... :icon_surprised:

Greg

just rebuilt mine about 2 months ago replaced all bearings, ball joints, seals, inner and outer tierod ends, all bushings, rotors, u joints, calipers and hoses, new gear oil, new grease, tires and alignment (wanted to only align once:D).

It's not possible to replace the seals on the diff (where the shafts go in) without pulling everything apart, no? When I did mine it seemed like there was a lip in the casting as if the seals were pressed in from inside the diff. They leak a tad after a day's wheeling but nothing serious.

I wasn't trying to pull the whole diff apart at the time...

I just want to say, this is the best small-truck 4x4 axle made, ever. Most importantly, it isn't made anymore. All we have is used parts. I haven't seen NOS axle parts for 5 years. If you neglect it and it breaks a yoke--you are killing an endangered species.

If you own a TTB RBV you have a responsibility to preserve it. You put 35s on an old rusty axle--you will kill it. With that e-clip, it's not easy to service. There are at least 2 articles on replacing that clip with an external spring (I did one of them, so I know) and you should do this. I did an article on clearancing your yokes so you don't bind and break when you increase wheel travel. Also, the window in the axle beam has to be greatly opened.

It's a closing door on these. They were built only a short time and it's doubtful somebody will start making them again. If you have one, take care of it. The newest TTB is 17 years old and the D35 version was only made from '91-'97. I buy them when I see them just to save them. I know how good it was, but also how much it was misunderstood and damaged by assholes.

when i had to replace my drivers side beam, i did have a difficult time locateing one. every 2-3 years i take mine apart and inspect evrything, replace whats needed and "go again" for another 2-3 years. i do prefer the ttb over the newer '98 & up front end, if i ever do replace my whole truck, i hope to find a '97.
