My credo
What's the worst that could happen?
Yes, I know POR15, Fluid Film etc, etc.
But has anyone tried roofing tar?

Stop laughing.
POR is like 200 for a gallon. Fluid Film is much more reasonable in spray cans.
But roofing tar is free in my barn.

Anyone? Whaddya think?

Try it and report back in 3-5 years.

I used Be Cool on the roof here and it is almost gone now. Right on time at 5 years later. I feel like under the truck would be gone much faster.

Takes about a year but it shrinks. I used it on my smoker between the boards instead of caulk, because I had a bunch of it on hand. I need to redo it. I thought I squeezed enough in the gaps but it dried & shrank quite a bit. The wood may have shrunk a bit too. It seems to shrink on metal roofs as well where I have used it.

You can kind of see how I used it here on the left side between the boards. If it's applied in a thin layer on metal, it might be fine. Maybe try it on a small spot and check back in a few years. I think there are better products out there.

Frame question: corrosion protection

POS15 is more like it.

Roofing tar would probably end up being just about as good as spray on rubber.. all it'll do is trap moisture and hide rust until it's too late.

Clean the frame, hit it with a converter/encapsuator like corroseal, and then spray it with NHOU.

NHOU is more or less fluid film, only it's mineral oil based so the stench isn't nearly as offensive.. it's a bit thicker than fluid film.. AND unlike fluid film it contains an acid that'll neutralize rust all on its own..
