Finally have to pull the trans.


I used to paint a line on bolts as a looseness checker. Now I have to do it because I can't remember which bolts I have torqued, and which I haven't.

I use a 4 to 5 phase torque crossing procedure, and go around the clock at the end of each phase. A bit excessive and time consuming, but it prevents ME from making mistakes.

I do this because my first two vehicles at 15 and 17 we're a '63 Karman Ghia and a '71 Triumph Bonneville, both aluminum block and head. I immediately stripped bolts, so I got nuts about torquing procedures.
 
Yep, I knew I'd find this when I cleaned them. Top passenger side, the one that gave me so much trouble, until I got the ratcheting gear-head and used a 2x4 on the ground. I could try filing it, but over the years I've found that not to be successful. Now I've got to find one....hope Ford still makes this bolt for something. Sometimes they use bolts for different models thru the years.

Any fastener shop should be able to set you up with suitable replacements for those. Nothing about it looks particularly unique.
 
I bet that will clean up with a file. Either way it's just a common metric bolt, hardware stores or Fastenal will have what you need, or a junkyard.

I save every bolt from vehicles I junk, I bet I have a couple coffee cans full of bellhousing bolts from Rangers...it comes in very handy.

I'm going to try filing on it, but trying to put the torque on it worries me. I don't wanna get stuck at that point.

The only one around here would be napa, or home depot.
The M9 is the shaft size, not the outside of the thread.
 
The 9.8 you see on the head of the bolt is the grade, basically how hard it is.

You will need a M10-1.5 thread bolt. NAPA and Home Depot probably would have something that will work. I have purchased those from Ace Hardware and Menards up here... it's a common size, don't worry if you get the exact bolt, the length and thread pitch is the important part.

As Shran said - that's something that Home Depot will have for sure, and probably Napa too. It's not an unusual bolt. Match the length and pitch, throw a washer on it as needed, and tighten it up.

Home depot has it, Napa might, but not class 10 or higher, only class 8.. These are hardened bolts.
The only bolt identical to the top bolts is the 2nd from top next to the header. It was easier to get to. If necessary I'll switch them out.
 
Metric 9.8 is roughly equivalent to a grade 5 SAE.
 
Yes, that's what mine says on top (98). Both the HomDep and Napa near me are smaller stores....but it's worth a look.

55mm length is not very common.
 
Yep, my homdep has a 50mm hex, with a washer under it, too short. My Napa only has a 45mm flange, so I'd have to order one either way.

I know my local stores pretty well, so I figured it wasn't worth looking there. Online, I have found both hex and flange in 55mm lengths. In flange, this bolt has 32mm thread length from the end. The flange bolts I found online only had 27mm of thread......so it would have to be full-threaded hex with a washer. I think there are still supply chain issues.

Considering all this, I'm still thinking using the bolt I have is my best option, in the 2nd from top position. It does fit in all my wrenches and sockets.
 
Can you get a 60mm and just shorten it? Although I do think cleaning up the one you have will be fine
