my friend and i both have 99 rangers 4.0s with auto tranny and while accelerating from a stop it feels like the tranny slips for a second and makes a "thud" sound. both trucks have about 100k miles and i am wondering if this is a common problem for rangers. i think it is the torque converter but im not sure. anyone know what this is or having the same problem?

Just a guess but you might be hearing the traction loc axle working, a reassuring sound in the winter.

Good luck

i actually just fixed this problem on my 03 (83,000mi). If its what i think ur talking about then it's the slip yoke. There is a thread on here somewhere about actually fixing it but basically look for a rubber boot on the driveshaft up towards the front, unclamp the fatter end of the two and slide it back. The pack it full of NGLI No.2 grease,i used basic wheel bearing grease and just filled it up on all sides entirely. Then slide the boot back over can clamp it back down with something if the old clamp is unusable. That should take care of the prob. Good luck!:icon_welder:
